About The Position

The Before and/or After School Staff oversees the engagement and development of children participating in YMCA programs. The role implements and facilitates enriching activities for an assigned group while supporting the YMCA’s mission to strengthen community bonds through positive interactions with members, including children, parents, staff, volunteers, community members, donors, and guests. This position creates a supportive, safe, and engaging environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive. Staff promote a welcoming atmosphere, model SMART behavior, connect members with YMCA services, and support the organization’s strategic initiatives, including volunteerism, philanthropy, health and well-being, and youth development.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must have a high school diploma, certificate of completion, or GED; alternatively, must be enrolled in and attending GED classes and successfully complete them within two years of employment, or be enrolled in and obtain a high school diploma within the school year of employment.
Must have or enroll in state-mandated trainings within 30 days of employment and complete them within 12 months.
Must be able to supervise and instruct large groups of children.
Must be mentally alert and able to process and follow directions.
Must be able to stand, remain outdoors, and maintain continual physical endurance for extended periods.
Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and watch, listen to, and facilitate group activities.
Upon hire, must complete Intro to the Ys Cause & Culture, Y's Way to Service & Engagement, and I Hear You: Service with CARE.
Must complete Principles of Youth Development training within 90 days of hire.
Must complete Introduction to S.A.F.E. training within six months of hire.
Within 90 days of completing MODS, must complete Preventing Sexual Abuse Between Youth Children, Youth Affirmations: Distinguishing Between Praise and Encouragement, Foundations of Listen First, and Engaging with Families trainings.

Nice To Haves

College degree in a child-related field.
Experience working with children.
CPR/AED certification.
First Aid certification.
Lifeguard certification.
Listen First certification.
Knowledge of sports and children’s programming.

Responsibilities

Supervise an assigned group of children and ensure their safety.
Maintain accurate attendance records, monitor bathroom breaks and transitions, and verify attendance through face-to-name checks.
Communicate and document children’s absences, injuries, and incidents in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Use positive reinforcement to encourage appropriate behavior and document and address inappropriate behavior using disciplinary protocols.
Facilitate purposeful programming that supports academic growth and provides enrichment opportunities.
Build relationships and foster a sense of belonging among children, parents, volunteers, staff, and school personnel.
Maintain a nurturing and secure environment; report suspicious activities that may endanger children or violate codes of conduct; organize supplies; maintain facility cleanliness; and care for equipment.
Promote a welcoming environment for all members and demonstrate SMART behavior as a role model.
Educate members about YMCA services and initiatives and connect them with YMCA offerings.
Inform members about volunteer opportunities and promote a culture of volunteerism.
Share personal YMCA experiences and invite participation in fundraising efforts to encourage philanthropy.
Celebrate members’ achievements in health and well-being goals.
Promote meaningful youth programs and services that nurture the potential of all youth.
Complete required YMCA and youth-development trainings within the stated timelines.
