About The Position

Join Discover After School at Michigan Avenue Elementary School and make a meaningful impact in the lives of elementary-aged students! We are seeking engaged, curriculum-focused, motivated, and reliable counselors who are passionate about creating a safe, structured, and enriching environment where children can learn, explore, and thrive. As an Before & After School Counselor, you will help bring our mission to life by implementing engaging curriculum, building positive relationships, and supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional growth through high-quality programming.

Requirements

  • Must complete the 40-hour Introductory Child Care Training approved by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) prior to start date.
  • Must also complete one of the following: Part II “Special Needs Appropriate Practices” or at least 8 hours of training in serving children with disabilities, 10-hour “School-Age Appropriate Practices” module, or 5-hour “Understanding Developmentally Appropriate Practices” and 5-hour “School-Age Appropriate Practices” courses.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Background Screening & Drug Screening.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (can be provided by Discover After School).

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who already possess the 40-hour Introductory Child Care Training certifications are strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)
  • Experience with Children: 1 year (Preferred)
  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent service to all students, families, co-workers, and school administration.
  • Meet the physical, emotional, and educational needs of the children in their care.
  • Work in a team environment; build and maintain healthy, cooperative relationships.
  • Communicate positively and effectively with the Site Director.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures both organizationally and departmentally to ensure the safety of children, parents, and staff.
  • Model positive behavior and educate children in a manner which contributes to mature and responsible behavior.
  • Complete all Discover After School and governmentally required training in the required time frame.
  • Implement the curriculum and schedule provided on a daily basis and provide feedback to such on a weekly basis.
  • Oversee and participate in the cleaning and maintaining of facilities, equipment, and all areas used.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed or requested.
  • Wear appropriate staff uniform as assigned.
  • Report to all scheduled shifts on time.
  • Uphold safety procedures for children, parents, and staff.
  • Follow scheduled activities.
  • Familiarity with and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Flexibility to perform additional tasks as required.
  • Promptly communicate any concerns to the Site Director.
