About The Position

The Basketball Referee officiates games with a higher level of complexity, ensuring fairness, safety, and sportsmanship among players. The role supports the YMCA’s mission by providing leadership and guidance to sports program participants.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Thorough knowledge of the sport and ability to enforce rules effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Completion of YMCA Sports Referee Level 1 or 2 training.

Nice To Haves

• Experience refereeing sports.
• Previous experience working with children in a supervised setting.

Responsibilities

• Arrive at games at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of basketball and enforce rules effectively.
• Conduct brief meetings with coaches before games and facilitate team gatherings.
• Recite the Youth Sports Pledge to promote sportsmanship and respect.
• Create a positive and supportive game environment.
• Stop play when necessary and explain violations consistently and fairly.
• Develop authentic relationships with players, parents, and volunteers.
• Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
• Follow YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and safety procedures.
• Work with varying age groups and manage large groups effectively.
• Attend required staff meetings, training sessions, and other YMCA activities.
• Work evenings and weekends as required.
