About The Position

EMCOR Services Automated Controls, a Debra-Kuempel brand, is seeking a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Design Engineer. The role is responsible for designing system architecture, developing installation plans, and establishing project pacing at the beginning of a project. The engineer designs automatic temperature control and energy management systems, including control schematics, wiring diagrams, sequences of operation, programming, and material lists based on customer needs and project plans and specifications. The engineer applies advanced engineering principles and industry standards to BAS and direct digital control (DDC) designs, exercises independent judgment in technical decisions, and serves as the technical lead on assigned projects. The position works with cross-functional teams, supports commissioning, maintains project documentation, and may travel to field locations as needed. The work involves extended periods at a computer as well as visits to job sites, where outdoor and other potentially hazardous conditions may be encountered.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering; extensive technical training and 2+ years of BAS/DDC or PLC experience may be considered instead of a formal degree.
  • Five years of experience designing, programming, or engineering automation/control systems.
  • Ability to apply advanced engineering principles and control theory to system design.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical systems, and BAS architecture.
  • Proficiency with schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel design.
  • Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or similar protocols.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio, Microsoft Office, and BAS-related networking.
  • Ability to interpret construction documents and engineering standards.
  • Independent judgment and discretion in technical problem-solving.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Effective communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-directed, accountable, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Professionalism, integrity, and strong collaborative skills.
  • Ability to navigate around job site locations and commute to field locations as needed.

  • Design and develop BAS, including DDC controls, using advanced engineering principles and industry standards.
  • Exercise independent judgment in system design, control strategies, and engineering solutions to meet project and compliance requirements.
  • Interpret construction documents to produce control system designs, submittals, and system architectures.
  • Develop and program control logic and integrate third-party systems, such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Serve as technical lead for assigned projects, making key engineering decisions and ensuring system functionality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align design intent and execution.
  • Identify project risks, gaps, and ambiguities; develop solutions and initiate requests for information (RFIs).
  • Review and validate engineering deliverables, including schematics, layouts, and sequences, for accuracy and quality.
  • Provide technical leadership during commissioning to ensure systems meet design intent.
  • Recommend design improvements to optimize system performance and reliability.
  • Select and specify control components and maintain accurate project documentation.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and escalate complex issues with recommended solutions.
