About The Position

EMCOR Services Automated Controls, a Debra-Kuempel brand, is seeking a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Design Engineer to design system architecture, establish installation plans and project pacing, and develop automatic temperature control and energy management systems. The work includes producing control schematics and wiring diagrams, defining sequences of operation, programming, and preparing material lists based on customer needs and project plans and specifications. The engineer designs and develops BAS, including DDC controls, applies engineering principles and independent judgment to design and technical decisions, interprets construction documents, and develops control logic and third-party system integrations. The role serves as a technical lead for assigned projects, collaborates with cross-functional teams, identifies risks and ambiguities, reviews engineering deliverables, and provides technical leadership during commissioning. It also involves selecting control components, maintaining project documentation, recommending design improvements, and providing subject matter expertise. The employee should expect extended periods at a computer and travel to field locations as needed. Field visits may involve outdoor work and exposure to weather, mechanical and electrical equipment, elevated or precarious areas, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical shock, vibration, and moderate-to-loud noise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering; extensive technical training and 2+ years of BAS/DDC or PLC experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.
  • Five years of experience designing, programming, or engineering automation/control systems.
  • Ability to apply advanced engineering principles and control theory to system design.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical systems, and BAS architecture.
  • Proficiency with schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel design.
  • Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or similar protocols.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio, Microsoft Office, and BAS-related networking.
  • Ability to interpret construction documents and engineering standards.
  • Independent judgment and discretion in technical problem-solving.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-directed, accountable, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Professionalism, integrity, and strong collaborative skills.
  • Ability to meet the described physical demands, including sitting, seeing, talking, hearing, using hands, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Ability to commute to and navigate field locations as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Automated Logic Corp (ALC) products is strongly preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop BAS, including DDC controls, using engineering principles and industry standards.
  • Use independent judgment in system design, control strategies, and engineering solutions to meet project and compliance requirements.
  • Interpret construction documents to produce control system designs, submittals, and system architectures.
  • Develop and program control logic and integrate third-party systems, such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Serve as technical lead for assigned projects and make key engineering decisions to ensure system functionality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align design intent and execution.
  • Identify project risks, gaps, and ambiguities; develop solutions and initiate RFIs.
  • Review and validate schematics, layouts, sequences, and other engineering deliverables for accuracy and quality.
  • Provide technical leadership during commissioning to ensure systems meet design intent.
  • Recommend design improvements to optimize system performance and reliability.
  • Select and specify control components and maintain accurate project documentation.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and escalate complex issues with recommended solutions.
