Backend Engineer (Python and Go)

About The Position

Qwist is seeking a Backend Engineer to join its Assess engineering team and build secure, scalable financial products. The role involves owning, building, and scaling the Assess backend infrastructure and product offering alongside other engineers. Backend systems are the primary focus, with occasional contributions to the React frontend to help deliver features. The engineer will design and maintain Python and Go microservices, use AI-first development workflows to plan and evaluate agent-generated code, and manage services on Kubernetes. The position also involves contributing to product and architecture decisions, operating and monitoring production systems, and maintaining high security and compliance standards for financial systems. The role is based in a hybrid working model across Qwist's Berlin and Munich locations.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building and scaling production-grade backend systems.
  • Production-level expertise in Go and/or Python, with the ability to switch between both.
  • High proficiency with AI-first coding workflows for increasing output and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on Kubernetes experience, including independently setting up, debugging, and managing containerized environments.
  • A product-oriented, founder-like mindset, with attention to users and the business and judgment about when to build a robust system versus ship an MVP.

Responsibilities

  • Co-own the backend stack by designing, building, and maintaining core microservices in Python and Go.
  • Use AI-first development workflows, creating detailed plans for agents and evaluating generated code for quality and requirements.
  • Manage, deploy, and scale services using Kubernetes to support high availability and reliability.
  • Collaborate with the team on architectural decisions, tool selection, and product roadmap decisions.
  • Build quickly while maintaining the security and compliance standards required for financial systems.
  • Run DevOps, monitor production systems, and occasionally work on the React/TypeScript frontend to unblock feature releases.

Benefits

  • Personal development budget.
  • Semi-annual feedback.
  • Clear growth paths.
