Backend Engineer

Kyndryl•Phoenix, AZ

About The Position

At Kyndryl, Backend Engineers design, build, manage, and modernize mission-critical technology systems. In this role, you will architect, build, and scale backend services and APIs using C#, .NET Core, and ASP.NET Core, integrating with legacy systems, third-party APIs, and existing data models. You will apply clean architecture, SOLID principles, dependency injection, and repository/service patterns to create maintainable, testable, and scalable systems. You will use AI coding agents and agentic development practices throughout the software development lifecycle, and implement workflows and CI/CD processes that use AI agents for activities such as code review, test generation, and deployment validation. You will build APIs and services supporting agentic and LLM-powered experiences, including streaming responses, error handling, and integration with multi-agent orchestration frameworks. You will collaborate with frontend and AI engineering teams on agentic workflows, RAG pipelines, and real-time data needs. The role involves working directly with subject matter experts to understand business challenges and translate requirements into technical architectures. You will participate in end-to-end delivery from scoping and prototyping through production deployment, communicate technical trade-offs and solution impact to technical and executive stakeholders, and contribute deployment learnings and best practices to Kyndryl's AI platforms and frameworks. You will also collaborate with engineering leads and contribute to backend build and release pipeline health in Azure DevOps. Kyndryl describes itself as committed to building an equitable and inclusive workplace. The company offers employee learning programs and access to certification opportunities, along with a volunteering and giving platform. COVID-19 vaccination is not generally required by Kyndryl, though client, customer, or partner locations may have their own requirements; eligible applicants may request a medical or religious accommodation before employment begins.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience with strong proficiency in C#, .NET Core, and ASP.NET Core modern versions; experience should not be primarily with legacy .NET Framework.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding agents or agentic development tools as a core part of the software development lifecycle, including implementing and maintaining agentic workflows in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience designing, building, and integrating REST APIs, including authentication and authorization, error handling, versioning, and JSON communication with third-party and legacy systems.
  • Practical SQL Server experience, including query optimization, stored procedures where appropriate, Entity Framework/Core, and data modeling with existing complex data models.
  • Azure experience, particularly Azure App Services, Functions, Service Bus, Key Vault, Storage, Application Insights, and Azure SQL, as well as Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, branching strategies, and environment configuration.
  • Experience with enterprise-scale applications and multiple integrations across business domains, including legacy systems and outdated APIs.
  • Understanding of microservices and distributed systems, including messaging and event-driven patterns, asynchronous processing, retries, and resiliency.
  • Ability to apply modern architecture and design patterns, including SOLID principles, dependency injection, repository/service patterns, and clean architecture.
  • Treat automated unit and integration testing and mocking as a core part of development.
  • Zero-trust security mindset, including secure API development, secrets management, authentication and authorization, and avoiding common vulnerabilities such as OWASP risks.
  • Ability to diagnose production issues involving logs, performance bottlenecks, failed deployments, APIs, or databases using logging, monitoring, and telemetry tools such as Application Insights.
  • Strong code quality practices, including code reviews, frequent pull requests, refactoring, technical debt management, and adherence to team coding standards.
  • Ability to understand existing systems holistically and work in complex enterprise codebases, integrating with and modernizing legacy systems without assuming a complete rewrite is needed.
  • Degree-level qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Informatics, Data Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical work experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with backend testing frameworks such as xUnit, NUnit, or MSTest and mocking libraries such as Moq.
  • Experience using AI agent tools for automated code review, test generation, or refactoring, such as Copilot Workspace or Cursor.
  • Experience with event-driven or messaging platforms such as Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or RabbitMQ and asynchronous processing patterns.
  • A T-shaped technical profile with deep backend engineering expertise and broad understanding of agentic AI development practices and enterprise consulting.
  • Technical contributions or feedback to core AI platforms, open-source repositories, or internal frameworks.
  • Experience modernizing or incrementally improving existing backend systems.
  • Active certifications in backend frameworks, cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, or AI-assisted development pathways.
  • An advanced degree (Master's or higher) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a closely related technical discipline.
