About The Position

The B Class Structural Welder is responsible for performing welding tasks according to specific standards and instructions. This role involves understanding directions, completing daily work assignments, maintaining a clean work environment, and preparing joints for inspection. The welder will also monitor the working environment for compliance with regulations and may be required to train lower-skilled workers. Flexibility in shifts and willingness to perform tasks outside of the core craft are expected. Adherence to the company's Equal Opportunity and Anti-Harassment Policy is mandatory.

Requirements

• Minimum 6 months experience as a Trades Assistant at Austal or 1 year related experience in similar industry required
• Must pass the GMAW Aluminum ‘B’ Class and/or an FCAW Steel ‘B’ Weld Certification and approved B Class pre-employment mock weld test
• Must be able to perform grinding along with arc gouging and back gouging of steel welds through mechanical, flame, and ARC gouging process, joint preparation for NDE and all other visual inspection processes.
• Must be able to demonstrate the safe and effective use of craft related tools and equipment, including but not limited to: milling discs, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come along and chain falls etc.
• The ability to understand directions and follow instructions.
• Must demonstrate an acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for a B Class Welder position.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems that may arise in certain situations.
• Two years of maritime experience
• Ability to work any shift or overtime as required by management, schedule must be flexible.
• 18 years of age or older at time of application
• Able to provide proof of US Person Status
• No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
• No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
• Willing to submit to a drug screen
• Willing to submit to a background check

Nice To Haves

• Completion of an Austal approved AIDT training course may be accepted in lieu above listed experience or may be required
• Performs the approved WPQT’s under limited supervision.
