About The Position

This position is responsible for performing structural welding tasks according to specific standards. The role involves understanding directions, completing daily work assignments, maintaining a clean work environment, and preparing joints for inspection. The welder will also monitor the work environment for safety and compliance, and may be required to train lower-skilled workers. Flexibility in shifts and willingness to perform tasks outside of the core craft are expected. The company emphasizes a professional and harassment-free workplace.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 months experience as a Trades Assistant at Austal or 1 year related experience in a similar industry, or graduate of a relevant/associated training course.
  • Completion of an Austal USA approved additional or accelerated Structural Welding training course may count towards additional required experience.
  • Must pass the GMAW Aluminum ‘B’ Class and/or an FCAW Steel ‘B’ Weld Certification and approved B Class pre-employment mock weld test.
  • Perform approved WPQT’s under limited supervision.
  • Able to perform grinding, arc gouging, and back gouging of steel welds through mechanical, flame, and ARC gouging processes.
  • Able to perform joint preparation for NDE and all other visual inspection processes.
  • Able to demonstrate the safe and effective use of craft-related tools and equipment (milling discs, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come along, and chain falls).
  • Ability to understand directions and follow instructions.
  • Must demonstrate acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for a B Class Welder position.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems that may arise in certain situations.
  • Two years of maritime experience.
  • Ability to work any shift or overtime as required by management; schedule must be flexible.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen.
  • Willing to submit to a background check.
