AX 2012 ERP System Administrator

Music & Arts•Frederick, MD

About The Position

Music & Arts is seeking a hands-on Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 ERP System Administrator focused on functional and system administration and Production stability. The role covers operations, incident response, configuration, integrations, batch orchestration, security, and reporting. The administrator coordinates with developers and vendors on code-level fixes; coding is incidental, but the role requires interpreting logs and X++ stack traces and shepherding fixes through change management. The role supports AX 2012 Production and key lower environments, including AOS and Batch administration, AIF integrations, SSRS monitoring and deployments, security, workflows, print management, and Management Reporter stability. It provides primary functional support to Finance, Supply Chain, and Retail super-users, drives root-cause analysis, and supports period close and peak events. The administrator leads Production incident response and change coordination, maintains runbooks and operational metrics, and implements proactive monitoring for system health, batch throughput, integrations, and reporting. The preferred arrangement is for someone within commuting distance of Frederick, Maryland, working onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week. Remote candidates may be considered from the listed states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Music & Arts, based in Frederick, Maryland, is part of the Guitar Center enterprise. It has more than 200 retail stores, more than 120 educational representatives, and more than 300 affiliate locations. The company is part of the world's largest multichannel musical instrument retailer.

Requirements

  • 4–6+ years of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 (R2/R3) Production support in a highly customized environment.
  • Proficiency in AX administration, including AOS, Batch, AIF configuration, SSRS deployment, the security model, and workflows.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills using Event Viewer, AX Trace Parser, SQL Profiler (read/trace), and AX logs.
  • Ability to interpret X++ stack traces and partner with developers on fixes.
  • Solid SQL Server literacy, including reading and modifying T-SQL for support.
  • Windows Server and IIS fundamentals.
  • Experience with Active Directory-backed authentication.
  • Experience with ITIL-lite Incident, Problem, and Change processes, runbook creation, and on-call.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps/TFS or Git for change tracking and release coordination.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day uptime, performance, and integrity of AX 2012 Production and key lower environments.

  • Maintain security roles, duties, and privileges; perform Segregation of Duties checks and periodic access reviews.
  • Manage print management, workflow execution, and Management Reporter or replacement stability.
  • Oversee environment refreshes, coordinate database and model store backup and restore, and arrange non-production data masking.
  • Serve as primary contact for Finance, Supply Chain, and Retail super-users; translate issues into reproducible defects or configuration requests.
  • Drive root-cause analysis for recurring incidents and implement configuration changes or coordinate code fixes with developers and ISVs.
  • Execute minor changes through configuration, security updates, SSRS parameters and datasets, and DIXF where appropriate, avoiding new code when feasible.
  • Support period close and peak events with playbooks, capacity planning, and stability checkpoints.
  • Lead P1/P2 AX Production incident response, including triage bridges, business communications, and post-incident root-cause analyses.
  • Operate a change process for non-code changes and coordinate model store and SSRS deployments with development and infrastructure teams.
  • Maintain runbooks for common failures, including stuck batches, AIF retries, orphaned sessions, blocked SQL, and SSRS timeouts.
  • Track MTTA/MTTR, batch-window adherence, and integration success rates, and reduce repeat incidents.
  • Administer AIF services, ports, schemas, adapters, and message pipelines; manage retries and error handling.
  • Coordinate with EDI/iPaaS partners and internal developers on interface defects and validate end-to-end data flows.
  • Implement proactive monitoring and alerting for AOS health, batch throughput, AIF queues, and SSRS job status.
  • Maintain interface catalogs, environment topology diagrams, and support RACI documentation.
  • Communicate expectations and ETAs to business super-users and improve operational hygiene.
  • Coordinate vendors and ISVs for add-ons, licenses, and hotfixes as needed.
