About The Position

Albuquerque Talent Development Academy Charter High School seeks a passionate, team player to help the school meet its academic goals by providing a structured AVID curriculum to students. An AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher prepares students for college and career success by teaching rigorous skills, fostering a college-going culture, and using WICOR methodologies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading). They mentor students, monitor academic progress, and implement specialized tutorials to boost success in advanced courses. The ideal candidate will be excited to create a strong, academic learning environment for students to succeed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Appropriate licensure
  • Willingness to get AVID Training (training will take place for a few days in June)
  • Ability to relocate to Albuquerque, NM 87105 before starting work

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual is a plus but not required
  • Endorsement in AVID is not required

Responsibilities

  • Implementing WICOR Strategies: Teach and model strategies focusing on Writing to learn, Inquiry-based instruction, Collaborative learning, Organization (such as binder checks), and Reading for comprehension.
  • Facilitating Tutorials: Guide tutorials twice a week, where students use Tutorial Request Forms (TRFs) to identify academic challenges and collaborate with tutors to find answers independently.
  • Building Academic Agency: Foster academic habits, critical thinking, and confidence, ensuring students take ownership of their learning and success.
  • Advocating for Rigor: Actively encourage students to enroll in rigorous, college-preparatory coursework (AP, IB, Honors) and provide the support necessary for them to succeed in those classes.
  • Mentoring and Support: Build strong relationships with students to foster a safe, supportive classroom culture, often guiding them through goal-setting and college/career exploration.
  • Collaborating with Staff: Work with counselors, administrators, and other staff to create a schoolwide college-ready culture.
