About The Position

The Aviation Department which operates the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the North Perry Airport is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Refrigeration Mechanic. The Aviation Refrigeration Mechanic must have the ability to perform skilled work in mechanical refrigeration in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems and centrifugal chillers. Work involves the servicing of air conditioning systems and units, refrigerators, water cooling systems and related equipment utilized in a wide variety of county facilities and buildings, including Pre-Conditioned Air (PC-Air) Systems. Work includes determining work methods and procedures and frequent participation in refrigeration assignments, as well as responsibility for the quality of work produced. Employees receive assignments in oral or written form, frequently accompanied by sketches, diagrams, and blueprints. Work is reviewed by technical and administrative supervisor for conformance with instructions and for adherence to established codes and regulations. Performs related work as required. Performs the overhaul and servicing of refrigeration units by checking the repair, replacement, and adjustment of worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps and the testing of refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks; performs the removal and replacement of motors, pumps, shafts and bearings. Performs servicing of air conditioning systems and units, refrigerators, water cooling systems and related equipment utilized in a wide variety of County facilities and buildings, including Pre-Conditioned Air (PC Air) Units. Work includes determining work methods and procedures and frequent participation in refrigeration assignments, as well as responsibility for the quality of work produced. Work is reviewed by technical supervisor for conformance with instructions and for adherence to established codes and regulations. Checks gauges and makes inspection for preventive maintenance; reads gauges and instruments, determines temperature, velocity and humidity factors using air and water temperature gauges; adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure and temperature; bleeds contaminants from system and charges with specified amount and type of refrigerant; checks gauges and makes periodic preventative maintenance inspections. Maintains up-to-date records on job orders; maintains effective and efficient working conditions; tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks; removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats; adjusts expansion valves; adjusts or changes belts; replaces gaskets, hinges, and hardware. Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings; performs the rebuilding, repairs and painting of wood and metal cooling towers and fans. Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years in journey level refrigeration mechanic or closely related experience.
  • Universal Certification from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
  • Ability to maintain authorization to drive a County vehicle.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) access with Customs and Border Protection Seal.
  • Ability to obtain / maintain Airfield driving privileges.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license during employment and maintain authority to drive on County business.
  • Undergo a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and a Security Threat Assessment (STA) to obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, as required by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Responsibilities
