Aviation Fuel Tank Superintendent - Mechanical

CMS Corporation•Bargersville, IN

About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Superintendent to oversee construction of aviation fuel storage tanks and related mechanical systems. The role requires leadership of field crews, practical knowledge of tank fabrication and erection, and hands-on trades experience, particularly welding door sheets (manways/access doors) and constructing tank roofs. The successful candidate will ensure safe, high-quality, on-schedule project delivery that meets aviation fuel handling and API standards. The position involves supervising mechanical tank construction, coordinating craft personnel, enforcing specifications and safety requirements, coordinating with project stakeholders, and monitoring schedule, productivity, materials, equipment, and workforce needs. The Superintendent reviews drawings and work packages, oversees fit-up, welding, NDE support, and dimensional control, maintains reports and as-built documentation, and mentors junior supervisors and craft personnel. This position requires travel, with frequency subject to change based on project volume and scope. Work takes place in both field and office settings. Field conditions include moving heavy machinery, inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold, and potentially loud noise. Office work is sedentary in a climate-controlled environment and involves computer, phone, and meetings.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Superintendent or equivalent senior field leadership role on large steel storage tank or similar industrial construction projects.
  • Hands-on trades background as a welder/fitter, including direct experience welding door sheets (manways/access openings) and constructing tank roofs.
  • Strong working knowledge of API 650 tank design and construction practices, ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 welding codes, and related fuel storage system standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-craft crews, manage subcontractors, and drive schedule and quality performance in field construction.
  • Understanding of tank erection sequences, roof framing and plating methods, floating roof components where applicable, and mechanical installation of nozzles, manways, and appurtenances.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural, mechanical, and piping drawings.
  • Strong safety leadership skills and familiarity with OSHA construction standards and site-specific safety programs.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work on active construction sites, including elevated work and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around moving heavy machinery and equipment and in outdoor conditions including inclement weather, heat, humidity, and cold.
  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 40 lbs. repetitively for 10–20 minute intervals without fatigue; constant movement and limb use for the duration of the shift.
  • In the office, ability to maintain a stationary position for prolonged periods and operate a computer and other office equipment; occasional transport of objects up to 15 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience specifically on aviation fuel (Jet-A/Jet fuel) tank farms or related terminal projects.
  • Welding certifications such as SMAW, FCAW, or GMAW, and documented experience with tank shell and roof welding.
  • Experience with floating roof tanks, aluminum geodesic domes, or internal floating roofs.
  • Familiarity with API 653 tank inspection/repair or similar maintenance/modification work.
  • Previous progression from journeyman welder/fitter to foreman to superintendent.
  • Project experience involving strict cleanliness, coating, or fuel system commissioning requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise mechanical construction activities for aviation fuel tanks, including shell erection, fixed and/or floating roof construction, nozzle and manway installation, and associated piping and appurtenances.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct the daily work of welders, fitters, ironworkers, and other craft personnel.
  • Ensure critical trades work is properly executed, drawing on experience welding door sheets/manways and constructing tank roofs.
  • Enforce project specifications, API 650 or applicable codes, welding procedures (WPS/PQR), quality control plans, and aviation fuel system cleanliness and purity requirements.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Engineers, QC Inspectors, Safety personnel, and other superintendents to maintain schedule, resolve field issues, and manage interfaces.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks, safety inspections, and pre-task planning, and promote a strong site safety culture.
  • Monitor productivity, material deliveries, equipment needs, and workforce allocation; identify and mitigate delays or bottlenecks.
  • Review drawings, isometric packages, and work packages; provide constructability input and field solutions.

  • Maintain daily reports, progress tracking, and as-built documentation.
  • Mentor junior supervisors and craft personnel while upholding high workmanship standards.
