About The Position

Hatch is seeking a dynamic Civil Engineering student for the Aviation Group for the term beginning Fall 2026, located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver office specializes in major Infrastructure, Power, and Mining projects, and the Aviation group falls within the Infrastructure sector. The candidate shall be a 3rd or 4th year student in Civil Engineering. Working closely with our Aviation Group engineers and designers, you will act as a technical resource on exciting and challenging infrastructure projects. You will apply good observation and analytical skills to support design and on-site field reviews. Candidates will be exposed to modern design tools including AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil3D and AviPLAN. The student will be assigned to work closely with experienced professional engineers who will provide guidance and mentoring. There will be opportunities to gain experience in a variety of technical areas.

Requirements

  • A 3rd or 4th year student currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering co-op program from an accredited University.
  • In good academic standing.
  • Extracurricular involvement; enthusiastic and ambitious.
  • Basic Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Desire to learn large airfield design projects such as runways and taxiways.
  • Self-motivated with good organizational capability.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Show critical and creative thinking and problem solving and bring forward solutions for our clients’ toughest challenges.
  • Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Valid passport (for Restricted Area Identification Card application with Transport Canada and the Vancouver Airport Authority).

Responsibilities

  • Work with project engineers and other project team members on drafting & design deliverables.
  • Use and become familiar with relevant standards covering aviation and airport environment.
  • Use relevant software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil3D, AviPLAN, MS Excel, MS Project) in course of work.
  • Assist with preparation of quantity take-offs in support of cost estimating purposes.
  • Support design and layout of airfield infrastructure, utility routing, and general civil engineering for planning, concept, detailed design, and construction support on multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Conduct desk studies, survey data review, as-built drawing review, existing data analysis, and design assignments.
  • Provide on-site field reviews for airport infrastructure projects, including monitoring, review, documenting, photographing, and comparing constructed condition to construction drawings and specifications.
  • On-site field reviews will primarily be at Vancouver Airport, but there may be need/opportunity to support other locations as well. Field review often requires night shifts.
  • Assist project managers and senior engineers to deliver infrastructure projects.
  • Support preparation of field review logs, design reports, and design drawings.
  • Support delivery of Hatch’s engineering consultancy services to budget and schedule.
