Autonomy Software Systems Engineer Sr – New Glenn

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, WA
•$156,802 - $219,522

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a senior software systems engineer to support the development and operations of New Glenn, a reusable, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle. The engineer will have end-to-end responsibility for a New Glenn autonomy software component, working across systems engineering and data-driven testing. The position directly contributes to launch success and involves defining software behavior, integrating software into flight and ground systems, verifying performance through simulation and hardware testing, and supporting tests and missions. The role requires close collaboration with controls engineers, subsystem designers, operators, and avionics teams. It includes assessing software changes for safety and performance, resolving issues on aggressive schedules, and improving engineering processes. Real-time support for hot-fire tests and missions in the support room is also part of the position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • 8–10 years of experience with technical design, analysis, or integrated testing of real-time or safety-critical software, such as in aerospace, automotive, or robotics.
  • Proficiency with engineering physics, software engineering, and closed-loop control principles.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles, including requirements decomposition, verification, validation, and configuration management for Model-Based Design.
  • Experience programming in Python.
  • Strong technical documentation skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of earning trust and driving teams to timely decisions.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with controls engineers, subsystem designers, and operators to define autonomy software behaviors.
  • Architect and document design decisions, decomposing them into software requirements, verification activities, and validation activities.
  • Support code reviews and validate software behavior through simulation data analysis, Hardware-In-the-Loop testing, and hardware testing.
  • Develop and run data analysis pipelines.
  • Drive autonomy software release-readiness decisions by assessing changes for safety, performance, and stakeholder needs.
  • Coordinate with Avionics teams to integrate autonomy software into flight and ground systems.
  • Define procedures and command sequences for rocket ground testing and operations.
  • Triage, investigate, and resolve software issues using test data on an aggressive schedule.
  • Rapidly develop tooling, scripts, and functions to address emergent issues.
