About The Position

MITRE’s Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department is seeking a technical intern to help develop artificial intelligence and autonomous system solutions for sponsor needs. The intern will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers on challenging sponsor programs and/or internal R&D supporting MITRE’s AI and autonomy efforts. The role offers hands-on experience with robotics, autonomous systems, and evaluation of state-of-the-art systems in a fast-paced team environment.

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student pursuing an accredited degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Must remain enrolled in the semester following the internship.
  • Foundational knowledge of robotics and/or autonomous systems concepts, such as robotic architectures, kinematics, dynamics, control, perception, or planning.
  • Familiarity with relevant software tools such as C/C++, Python, ROS, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar.
  • Sustained excellence in academic performance.
  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public or advancing societal missions through work experience, volunteer activities, or other relevant engagements, especially in robotics or autonomous systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying robotics or autonomous systems coursework in an internship, research lab, project team, robotics club, competition team, or independent project.
  • Proficiency with robotics software frameworks and tools such as ROS/ROS2, Gazebo or other simulators, embedded development environments, and version control such as Git.
  • Experience with robot perception and computer vision.
  • Experience with path planning, navigation, and control algorithms.
  • Experience with real-time and embedded systems for robotics.
  • Experience with machine learning for perception or decision-making in autonomous systems.
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers and researchers on robotics and autonomous systems work.
  • Apply academic knowledge to one or more areas, including autonomous vehicles; robot perception and sensor fusion; motion planning, navigation, and control; real-time and embedded robotics software; robotics-focused AI and machine learning; SLAM and state estimation; human–robot interaction; multi-agent and swarm robotics; modeling, simulation, and digital twins; safety, reliability, and verification; cybersecurity; field testing, experimentation, and data collection; and robotics hardware and software integration.
  • Support sponsor programs and/or internal R&D related to MITRE’s AI and autonomy efforts.
  • Help build robots and artificial intelligence projects and evaluate state-of-the-art systems.
