About The Position

As a Mechanical Associate, the Automotive SMOG Technician helps ensure vehicles meet CarMax standards for safety, reliability, and performance. The role involves inspecting and/or diagnosing, repairing, and reconditioning vehicles, including work on engines, brakes, steering, and suspension systems. The technician works with a team in a modern, climate-controlled facility and has access to ongoing training and advanced tools.

The hourly rate is $40.20. CarMax is offering an eligible external candidate a sign-on bonus of up to $3,000.

Requirements

• Experience in engine repair, steering and suspension, brakes, and HVAC systems, based on the needs of the role.
• Strong understanding of health and safety compliance.
• Ability to lift heavy objects and work on your feet for extended periods.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
• Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Where required by state or local law, maintain ASE certifications in Steering and Suspension (A4), Brakes (A5), Heating Air Conditioning (A7), Electrical (A6), Engine Repair (A1), Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3), Engine Performance (A8), and Automatic Transmission/Transaxle (A2).

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicles to meet CarMax quality and safety standards.
• Collaborate with the team to resolve technical challenges.
• Work on domestic and foreign vehicles.
• Support customer satisfaction and trust.
• Follow Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements and maintain a clean, orderly work area.

Benefits

• Paid sick time: eligible full-time hourly or commission/incentive-eligible associates can accrue up to 48 hours per year.
• Paid vacation: eligible full-time hourly or commission/incentive-eligible associates receive 80 to 200 hours per year after a 90-day waiting period, depending on years of continuous service.
• Six paid scheduled holidays per year, with eight hours of pay for each, plus one floating holiday.
• Holiday Premium Pay for eligible associates who work on a scheduled holiday due to business need.
• Full-time salaried associates receive paid time away as needed for sick time, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, and floating holidays, subject to manager approval.
• Up to $3,000 sign-on bonus for eligible external candidates.
