About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire an Automotive Mechanic. Under the immediate supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Automotive Mechanic maintains and repairs a fleet of vehicles at a field headquarters and ensures compliance with departmental safety rules. This position is a union position; therefore, provisions of the relevant collective bargaining agreement/labor contract apply to the filling of this position. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school, or coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance, or completion of an approved training course.
  • Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic.
  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation.
  • Requires pre-employment physical examination, drug and alcohol testing and random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Requires valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A.
  • Requires occasional statewide travel with occasional overnight stays to make equipment repairs at the job site.
  • Must reside within a 45-minute travel time frame from the primary work location.
  • Requires overtime and 24/7 day emergency on-call status.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers experience and extensive knowledge in the use of mechanical hand tools, machinery, and testing equipment used in equipment and motor repair, including the ability to diagnose, adjust, and correct mechanical issues.
  • Prefers knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety measures.
  • Prefers skill and ability to work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints as well as oral and written instructions.
  • Prefers ability to weld and perform simple blacksmith operations.
  • Prefers ability to work well with others.
  • Prefers ability to prepare work activity reports.
  • Prefers ability to perceive objects with sharpness.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mechanical repairs on vehicles assigned to field headquarters and also conducts repairs at the site of a disabled vehicle.
  • Performs regular inspection and maintenance of vehicles on an established schedule.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of all maintenance and repairs performed.
  • Performs minor welding and fabrication.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above and ensures compliance with departmental safety rules.
