The Automotive Controller is responsible for reporting the financial condition of the total dealership to the dealer/general manager regularly and accurately. This role provides sales and expense analyses, summarizing potential problem areas and opportunities for improved profitability relative to monthly and annual forecasts. The Controller prepares a complete financial statement monthly according to dealership guidelines and manufacturer formats, ensuring all manufacturer accounts are current and accurate. They interpret financial statements and daily operating controls, informing the dealer of developing trends, and participate in preparing short- and long-term financial forecasts. The position provides department managers with detailed financial and management reports, maintains an effective cash management system, and directs the assessment of depreciation rates. Responsibilities include reviewing the general ledger, investigating unusual entries, and ensuring proper reconciliation of accounts. The Controller stays abreast of tax code revisions, ensures compliance with government finance regulations, and manages the dealership computer system. They administer a loss review program, evaluate insurance renewals, purchase property and liability insurance, and process all insurance claims. The role also coordinates annual audits and physical inventories, supervises office personnel to ensure proper accounting procedures, and strives to improve data integrity. Attendance at manager meetings and maintaining a professional appearance are also required, along with other assigned tasks.
