The Automotive Controller is responsible for reporting the financial condition of the total dealership to the dealer/general manager regularly and accurately. This role provides sales and expense analyses, summarizing potential problem areas and opportunities for improved profitability relative to monthly and annual forecasts. The Controller prepares a complete financial statement monthly according to dealership guidelines and within each manufacturer's format and time frame, ensuring all manufacturer accounts are current and accurate. This position interprets the financial statement and the daily operating control (DOC) regularly, informing the dealer of developing trends. The Controller participates in the preparation of short- and long-term financial forecasts, provides department managers with detailed financial and management reports, and maintains an effective cash management system. Responsibilities include directing the assessment of depreciation rates, reviewing the general ledger and scheduled accounts, and investigating unusual entries. The role also involves reviewing the reconciliation of general ledger accounts, staying abreast of tax code revisions, and ensuring compliance with all applicable government finance regulations. The Controller manages the dealership computer system, administers a loss review program, and evaluates insurance renewals. This position purchases property and liability insurance, prepares and processes insurance claims, and coordinates the annual audit and physical inventory. The Controller ensures that all office personnel use proper accounting procedures and maintains accurate records, supervising the preparation of information for the CPA to minimize audit costs. The role continually strives to improve data integrity and information reporting throughout the dealership and attends managers meetings.
