About The Position

Support the development, testing, and improvement of machine vision systems used in automated manufacturing and product inspection. Under engineering guidance, apply programming, optics, and hands-on electrical skills to camera, lighting, and image processing projects while gaining experience in medical device manufacturing. The role has no supervisory responsibilities. The position requires a candidate currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related engineering discipline. Coursework, labs, research, student teams, and personal projects may satisfy the qualifications; prior industry employment is not required.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Basic understanding of optics, including lenses, focus, and image formation, with an interest in learning how lighting and optics affect machine vision performance.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel for organizing and analyzing data, using formulas, and creating charts, and Word for preparing clear, well-formatted technical documents.
  • Ability to read technical instructions, equipment manuals, and basic schematics; document methods and results clearly; and communicate questions, findings, and progress with engineers, technicians, and production personnel.
  • Ability to apply college-level algebra, geometry, and basic statistics to measurements, image analysis, and experimental results; familiarity with unit conversions, tolerances, and graphical data interpretation.
  • Ability to approach technical problems logically, develop and test hypotheses, compare results, and ask for guidance when needed.
  • Curiosity, attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to stand, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel; occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Programming projects using at least one language, such as Python, C++, C#, MATLAB, or Visual Basic; ability to explain personal contributions to developing and debugging code.
  • Hands-on electrical experience assembling, wiring, testing, or troubleshooting circuits, sensors, or electronic systems; familiarity with basic schematics and use of a multimeter or similar test equipment.
  • Machine vision or computer vision exposure through a course, lab, or project involving image acquisition, image processing, or camera-based inspection; ability to explain the work and results.
  • Experience with OpenCV, Cognex In-Sight or VisionPro, Keyence vision systems, PLCs, microcontrollers, robotics, or image processing algorithms.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setting up cameras, lenses, lighting, and vision sensors for automated inspection.
  • Evaluate focus, field of view, exposure, and lighting to improve inspection image quality.
  • Collect inspection images and help analyze missed defects and false rejects.
  • Develop and debug scripts for image processing, data analysis, or test automation.
  • Assist with vision tools for presence detection, orientation, measurement, and barcode reading.
  • Build and troubleshoot low-voltage test circuits and sensor connections using schematics and electrical test equipment under supervision.
  • Support camera and sensor communication with computers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Conduct experiments, record results, and help identify causes of inspection problems.
  • Prepare technical documentation and support approved testing, validation, and change control activities.
  • Follow safety and quality procedures; perform equipment work only as trained and authorized.
