About The Position

The Automation Manager is responsible for overseeing all automated systems within the distribution center, ensuring optimal performance, uptime, safety, and efficiency across material handling equipment and warehouse automation systems. This role leads preventative maintenance strategy, troubleshooting, vendor coordination, system optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives to support high-volume fulfillment operations for a fast-paced retail client. The ideal candidate has strong experience in warehouse automation, controls systems, maintenance leadership, and operational excellence within large-scale distribution or fulfillment environments.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in warehouse automation, industrial maintenance, or controls management
  • 3+ years in leadership or management role
  • Experience in: High-volume distribution centers, E-commerce fulfillment, Retail logistics, 3PL operations
  • Strong knowledge of: PLC systems, Controls systems, Conveyor systems, Robotics, WMS/WCS integration
  • Experience managing vendors and contractors

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of automated material handling systems including: Conveyors, Sortation systems, ASRS (Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems), Robotics, Scanners, PLC-controlled equipment, Packaging automation, Print/apply systems, Labeling and fulfillment systems
  • Ensure maximum uptime and minimal disruption to fulfillment operations
  • Lead root cause analysis for system failures and recurring downtime
  • Manage preventative and predictive maintenance programs
  • Coordinate emergency repairs and vendor service calls
  • Lead automation technicians, maintenance teams, and third-party vendors
  • Develop schedules, priorities, and escalation protocols
  • Coach and train team members on safety, troubleshooting, and best practices
  • Drive accountability for performance metrics and service levels
  • Identify opportunities to improve throughput, efficiency, and system reliability
  • Partner with operations leadership on process improvements
  • Support Lean, Six Sigma, and Kaizen initiatives
  • Track KPIs including: Downtime, Mean time to repair (MTTR), Preventative maintenance completion, Equipment reliability, Labor efficiency
  • Ensure OSHA compliance and safe operation of all equipment
  • Maintain vendor compliance and documentation
  • Support audits and client reporting requirements
