Automation application specialist

Schneider ElectricMontreal, QC

About The Position

As an automation application specialist, you are the technical bridge between our vision of "Open Software Defined Automation" and the customer's reality. You don't just "program PLCs"—you architect software-defined solutions that solve the industry's biggest challenge: obsolescence. Based in Canada you will partner with Sales and Solutions Architect to co-engineer high-value applications, ensuring that customers don't just buy EAE, but successfully adopt it as their new operational standard.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, or software engineering.
  • 1–4 years of experience in industrial automation with strong knowledge of PLCs, SCADA, and DCS.
  • Proficiency with industrial protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, Ethernet/IP and Modbus.
  • Strong understanding of IIoT, Windows/Linux, virtualization (Docker/Kubernetes), and OOP programming (Python, C#, JavaScript).
  • Ability to design event‑driven architectures and willingness to travel up to 40%.

Nice To Haves

  • Functional knowledge of French and English to collaborate effectively with teams, clients, and stakeholders at provincial and international levels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Conversion: Act as the technical backbone for the sales team, transforming complex technical constraints into competitive advantages.
  • Technical Discovery: Lead workshops that move the conversation from "Specs" (scan time, I/O count) to "Value" (decoupled software, lifecycle savings).
  • Competitor Migration: Develop and execute strategies to port legacy competitor code into the EAE environment.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Build "Proof of Concept" (POC) applications for mission-critical segments (Hoisting, Packaging, Water, MMM).
  • Architecture Optimization: Conduct design audits to ensure customer projects are scalable, cyber-secure (62443-SL2), and follow "Universal Automation" best practices.
  • Library Development: Create and validate HW/SW CATs (Composite Automation Types) that simplify complexity for the end-user.
  • Success Storytelling: Don't just finish a project—document it. Create white papers and case studies that turn a single win into a repeatable global solution.
  • Community Engagement: Represent Schneider Electric in industry forums and open automation groups to drive the "Universal Automation" movement.
