About The Position

This is a permanent part-time position with guaranteed hours, working 48.5 hours bi-weekly. The schedule is rotational and includes days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, requiring flexibility. The hourly pay rate ranges from $23.03 to $25.21 for the Autism Support Assistant role, with different rates for overnight awake and sleep positions. The role is part of the SEIU Local 1 union. The position is open to both internal and external applicants. Kerry's Place aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through continuous training and development, offering a fun and vibrant career where every day is an adventure.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Developmental Service Worker Diploma from a recognized Community College or Human Services Diploma/Degree from a recognized Community College or University or a Personal Support Worker certificate from a Community College or from a registered and Ministry approved Private Career College; OR
  • Completion of Ontario Secondary School (or equivalent) and 1 year of related experience (preferably supporting people with Autism).
  • Solid communication skills both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and sound judgment.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to motivate others.
  • Must have the ability to physically support children, youth, and adults with Autism.
  • Must have the ability to perform the required physical techniques of NVCI training from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI).
  • Position requires flexible working hours and ability to travel as required.
  • A valid Driver’s License, with a minimum G2 and access to a reliable vehicle is required and proof of third party liability insurance coverage.
  • As a condition of employment, employees must be able to provide a Driver’s Abstract in good standing with fewer than three demerit points.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and act according to Kerry’s Place Autism Services Employee Performance Standards demonstrating respect for all people.
  • Use creativity and resourcefulness to ensure that quality of life principles are effectively applied for the people supported, enhancing and maintaining their dignity and respect.
  • Provide solutions to barriers impacting achievement of quality of life and participate to ensure Personal Outcomes for people are met as defined by each participant.
  • Understand and implement actions to support people to achieve the goals identified in their Person Directed Plan.
  • Provide appropriate supports, tools, etc. to ensure the health and safety of the people supported, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety and Abuse Prevention Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure that Behaviour Support Plans and skill-building strategies are consistently implemented as directed by clinical staff and/or supervisors.
  • Provide support and coaching in social skills, communication, vocation, daily living skills, and leisure activities.
  • Ensure the work area is clean and safe; correct or report any safety concerns immediately. Document and report accidents, injuries, and near misses immediately.
  • Use Kerry’s Place Autism Services resources in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
  • Ensure accuracy and timely completion of documentation for legislative and policy requirements, such as individual’s files, health records, Person Directed Plans, and data collection.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with families, natural supports, volunteers, professionals, community members, and other people interacted with.
  • Administer medication according to Kerry’s Place Autism Services Policy and Procedure, understanding the purpose, expected effects, and potential side effects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
