About The Position

The Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist provides consultation services to staff who work with RCSD students who are classified or diagnosed with Autism. They provide strategies and support to staff to enable students to effectively communicate, socialize, gain independence, problem solve, and function effectively in their educational environment. The Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist assists with the evaluation, assessment, instruction, and curriculum modifications using research-based/evidence based practices for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They support school teams, families, and other support staff through consultation, modeling of best practice instructional techniques, and by providing training and professional development.

Requirements

  • NYS certification in one of the following areas: Speech Language Pathology, Special Education, School Psychology, School Social Work, Occupational/Physical Therapy
  • At least 3 years experience within a school setting (or equivalent) working with students with Autism.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of students social, communication, behavioral and educational needs within school, home and community
  • Provide recommendations, assistance and feedback regarding the implementation of a childs IEP or 504 plan
  • Provide information on community support
  • Develop and provide training for staff, for example: the use of visual supports including schedules, social narratives, positive reinforcement systems, cue cards, communication systems
  • Transition support from Preschool to School age
  • Special Education programming
  • Assistance with IEP (Individual Education Plan) development
  • Development of model student materials for program implementation
  • Assistance in development of FBA (Functional Behavioral Assessment) and BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan)
