About The Position

The Teacher on Special Assignment- Special Education Support (TOSA) provides coordination and support for special education programs and services while maintaining certification as an Intervention Specialist. This position supports compliance with federal and state special education requirements, assists staff with implementation of special education services, and promotes positive outcomes for students with disabilities. The TOSA serves as a district resource to intervention specialists, related service providers, administrators, and families by supporting the implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs), monitoring timelines and documentation, and helping ensure high-quality educational programming for students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid Ohio Teaching License and/or the appropriate Endorsement and Authorization for the assignment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education from an accredited college or university.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Maintain appropriate licenses/endorsements and training hours as required.
  • Comply with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to all standards established by the Ohio Department of Education for Licensed Educators.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain knowledge of academic area, teaching methodology and strategies to engage students.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of district special education programs and services.
  • Serve as a resource to intervention specialists, related service providers, and general education staff.
  • Promote consistent implementation of district special education procedures.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of special education guidance documents, forms, and resources.
  • Support district initiatives related to inclusive practices and specially designed instruction.
  • Monitor and support compliance with federal and state special education regulations.
  • Support district preparation for state monitoring activities and audits.
  • Assist with collection and organization of special education data.
  • Support EMIS and special education reporting requirements as assigned.
  • Provide technical assistance to staff regarding IEP development and implementation.
  • Participate in IEP, ETR, transition, and problem-solving meetings as requested.
  • Support transition planning for students moving between grade levels, buildings, programs, and postsecondary settings.
  • Provide mentoring and support to new intervention specialists.
  • Provide coaching regarding compliance requirements, documentation, instructional practices, and service delivery.
  • Collaborate with building principals, instructional staff, and families to support student success.
  • Facilitate or assist with professional development activities related to special education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
  • Exhibit professional behavior, emotional stability and sound judgement.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Attends meetings, professional development and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Interacts in a positive manner with staff, students and parents.
  • Refer suspected cases of child abuse immediately to the appropriate child protective services/law enforcement agency as mandated by state law and Board of Education policy.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect district equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Plans purposeful assignments for educational assistants (para-professionals), volunteers and student teachers.
  • Ensure students safety.
