About The Position

The primary duty of the position is to represent the Florida Department of Revenue in litigation in the state courts and in the Division of Administrative Hearings. Cases involve matters related to tax assessments, refund claims, and ad valorem (property tax) issues statewide. The attorney may be assigned to cases both at the trial and appellate levels.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
  • Membership of the Florida Bar.
  • Proof of Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor and approval to sit for the Florida bar exam must be provided prior to the date of employment (for non-members).
  • Admission to the bar within 12 months of the date of employment (contingent upon offer).
  • Complete and accurate application profile including dates of service, reason for leaving, and all employment history.
  • Verifiable experience, education, training, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities.
  • Applicant responses to qualifying questions must be verifiable.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants who are law school graduates but not current members of the Florida Bar can be considered.
  • Third-year law students can be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Florida Department of Revenue in litigation in state courts and the Division of Administrative Hearings.
  • Handle cases involving tax assessments, refund claims, and ad valorem (property tax) issues.
  • Work on cases at both the trial and appellate levels.
  • Research and draft pleadings, motions, discovery, memoranda, briefs, orders, and other legal documents.
  • Assist or lead in developing litigation strategy in conjunction with the client.
  • Prepare witnesses for depositions and trial.
  • Conduct discovery.
  • Prepare for trial or hearing.
  • Represent the Department in simple to medium complexity matters.
  • Co-counsel on more complex matters.
  • Continue to acquire expertise in state tax matters and litigation through formal training programs.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including coordinating work assignments, attending staff meetings, preparing travel vouchers, time records, and case status reports, and filing documents.
