Requirements

  • Proficiency in evaluation, rehabilitation and education of orthopedic musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Clinical experience with a variety of patient populations.
  • Acute Care proficiency.
  • Advance taping, bandaging and splinting experience.
  • Familiarity and experience with a variety of “soft goods” applications, adjustments and maintenance.
  • Certified with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association.
  • Member in good standing with both the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, required and Manitoba Athletic Therapists Association is preferred.
  • Registered member of the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists- Certified or currently working towards certification.
  • CATA, CSOT
  • Current CPR Certificate
  • Excellent patient rapport.
  • Ability to assist in the supervision and education of medical therapy, nursing and other students.
  • Team concept skills in a multidisciplinary medical environment.
  • Able to assist the Minor Injury Clinic physician as directed.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time and do heavy lifting.

Nice To Haves

  • Member in good standing with the Manitoba Athletic Therapists Association is preferred.
  • Currently working towards certification with the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates cooperation by offering assistance to other Minor Injury Clinic Staff.
  • Applies plaster and fiberglass casts under the direction of the Physician.
  • Removes, adjusts and trims plaster and fiberglass casts as directed by the Physician.
  • Makes plaster and fiberglass splints as required.
  • Applies bandages and slings as required.
  • Removes sutures, staples and pins related to external fixation as directed by the Orthopaedic Surgeon.
  • Applies ankle and knee orthopaedic braces as directed by physician.
  • Dispenses crutches and instruction of crutch walking as required.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and provides care in a manner consistent with Pan Am Clinic- Minor Injury Clinic Values.
  • Conduct full and complete biomechanical assessment as needed related to orthopedic injuries.
  • Provide information and education specific to the patient on reconditioning and rehabilitation based on assessment.
  • Provide biomechanical approaches to reduce the impact chronic musculoskeletal conditions on the activities of daily living and prevent further injury.
  • Provide patients with instruction on supportive taping for injury for activities of daily living and return to sport.
  • Consult with the medical team when a course of treatment may be ineffective or inappropriate for the current condition of the patient.
  • Maintains general tidiness of the Cast Room.
  • Demonstrates the primary goal of patient satisfaction through interacting positively with patients, families and related health care providers in a respectful, courteous, confidential and caring manner.
  • Provides recommendations for ordering of equipment and supplies to the Charge Technician.
  • Maintains required statistical information as required.
  • Documents on the interdisciplinary progress notes utilizing the focus charting guidelines.
  • Completes critical skill care of wounds and dressing changes with adherence to infection control standards under the Pan Am Clinic Infection Control Policies.
  • Reports all missing/broken equipment and/or needed repairs to the Charge Technician.
  • Ensures fiscal restraint in the use and ordering of supplies.
  • Assists with the preventative maintenance program for related equipment.
  • Participates in providing in service education to staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
