About The Position

The University of Ottawa Library is seeking an innovative, motivated, and service-oriented Associate University Librarian to lead its Research Services division. The successful candidate will be a creative and experienced leader with a proven record of strength in library operations, who works effectively with colleagues in a complex and evolving environment. This role reports to the University Librarian and Dean of Libraries and provides strategic and administrative leadership for assigned functions. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the AUL contributes to the overall strategic direction, leadership, and administration of the Library, fostering an innovative and inclusive work culture that values equity, diversity, accessibility, anti-racism, and inclusion. The Research Services division specifically focuses on advancing the University's research mission by providing timely services to faculty, researchers, and students, offering subject expertise, engaging in discipline-specific teaching, and building relationships within the research community. The AUL for Research Services will be responsible for designing and implementing activities that support the University's research enterprise, exploring innovative approaches to research assistance, and strengthening strategic relationships with internal and external partners.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS) from an institution that has been accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience as a professional librarian or archivist demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility, including leadership and/or management experience, preferably in a unionized workplace.
  • A proven record of strength in several library operational areas.
  • Knowledge of strategic trends impacting academic libraries, including services, collections, technologies, and spaces.
  • Understanding of the broader university governance context.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in both French & English.
  • Highly collaborative and collegial, with the ability to participate in shared decision making.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective change strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote positive organizational culture, including the ability to engage, empower, and motivate people.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate and promote library value.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management and assessment methodologies.
  • Demonstrated success using innovation and flexibility to address challenges.

  • Provides strategic and administrative leadership for functions in their assigned portfolio.
  • Adopts a holistic, library-wide view in terms of strategic planning, communication, and fostering an innovative work culture.
  • Shares responsibility and accountability for the strategic direction, leadership, and administration of the Library as a whole.
  • Fosters an inclusive and accessible environment in the context of a university community that values and promotes principles of equity, diversity, accessibility, anti-racism and inclusion.
  • Designs and implements activities that contribute to the University’s overall research enterprise and priorities.
  • Explores and elaborates innovative and responsive approaches to research assistance tailored to the needs of the user population, including opportunities and support for experiential learning.
  • Seeks out opportunities to create and strengthen strategic relationships with internal and external partners (e.g. Office of the VP Research and Innovation and its subunits, such as the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity, senior administrators in the faculties, and external partners such as funding agencies, government agencies, other academic institutions, and professional associations).
