About The Position

Norfolk State University is seeking an Associate University Counsel to handle a broad range of legal matters for all divisions of the University. This role serves as agency counsel, advising decision-makers on legal risks and obligations. The position may represent NSU in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies, and in pre-litigation and transactional matters. Additionally, the counsel will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General.

Requirements

  • Excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • High level organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
  • Must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or be eligible for immediate admission.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law or the service of state agencies or institutions is preferred.
  • Specific experience in the representation of higher education institutions is preferred.
