About The Position

The Associate Supervisory Nurse serves in the Medical Surgical Department at Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico. The position provides nursing leadership and oversight through administrative coordination, staff education, clinical supervision, and promotion of safe, effective, high-quality patient care across medical, surgical, and specialty services. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

  • Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. The investigation must find that you are suitable for Federal employment in your position. If you are found not suitable, you will be terminated after you begin work. If you make a false statement in any part of your application, you may not be hired; you may be fired after you begin work; or subject to possible criminal charges. You may be subject to a credit check as a part of the background investigation process.
  • Prior to the appointment, candidates must present two valid forms of identification. If one of the documents is a state-issued ID or driver's license, it must be REAL ID-compliant.
  • A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
  • For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  • Possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Demonstrates clear, respectful oral communication by monitoring patient and unit needs, communicating significant issues to appropriate staff, and participating in interdisciplinary discussions to promote collaboration, patient advocacy, and employee development.
  • Provides education on illness, treatment, medications, discharge planning, self-care, health promotion, and follow-up while identifying operational issues and recommending improvements to promote safe, efficient, quality care.
  • Demonstrates effective problem-solving by identifying clinical and operational issues, analyzing contributing factors, prioritizing solutions, coordinating resources, resolving complex care concerns, and implementing appropriate actions to promote safe, efficient, and quality patient care.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive nursing care across the lifespan by applying clinical judgment, pharmacology, emergency interventions, medications, treatments, intravenous therapy, transfusions, and diagnostic procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures professional nursing practice aligns with ethical standards, policies, protocols, and patient-centered care principles while maintaining confidentiality and addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and sociocultural needs.
  • Coordinates and supervises nursing services, staffing, resource utilization, and patient care operations to ensure quality outcomes, effective employee utilization, and compliance with organizational objectives.
  • Investigates and resolves complex patient-care issues, manages crisis situations, communicates effectively during challenging or disciplinary situations, and advocates for patients while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and the community.
  • Supervises staff and support personnel, coordinates scheduling and leave, evaluates performance, addresses employee concerns and disciplinary matters, implements personnel and training procedures, and communicates management policies, career development opportunities, and workplace expectations.
  • Reviews and updates policies, procedures, and standards using evidence-based practice; ensures accurate documentation, safe equipment operation, quality improvement, and compliance while collaborating with nursing, medical, and administrative teams.
  • Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients of all ages with complex conditions, using the nursing process, sound clinical judgment, medication and treatment administration, emergency interventions, appropriate delegation, and timely communication of patient changes or concerns.
