Associate Software Engineer

Carnegie Mellon University•Pittsburgh, PA

About The Position

The Associate Software Engineer will join Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI), specifically its Enabling Edge Intelligence (E2I) team. E2I develops and optimizes intelligent edge systems for resource-constrained environments where safety, reliability, and performance are essential. The role collaborates with faculty, researchers, and industry to prototype, mature, and transition technologies to government and defense organizations. The work focuses on intelligent edge systems and high-impact software engineering challenges. The position requires a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, along with at least three years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and deploying software systems. The successful candidate will have a solid foundation in software engineering across the software development life cycle; strong coding skills in at least one of Python, C++, C, or Java; and practical deployment experience in local or cloud environments, with familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines. Experience using generative AI and agentic tools in coding, debugging, and deployment workflows is also required. The role is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and includes less than 10% travel. The employee will be subject to a background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance.
