About The Position

Environmental Works (EWI) is looking for an Associate Scientist to join our Assessment team. This position combines fieldwork, research, and report writing to support environmental site assessments, hazardous materials inspections, sampling, and remediation projects. The Associate Scientist will work closely with project managers, clients, regulators, subcontractors, and other team members to collect accurate data, document field activities, and develop practical solutions for a variety of environmental challenges. To be successful, this individual will be comfortable working in both field and office environments, managing deadline-driven projects, and approaching each assignment with professionalism, reliability, and a strong desire to learn. Requirements

• Valid Driver's License is required.
• Undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Physical Science, Environmental Engineering or related degree is required.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong research and technical writing abilities with close attention to detail.
• Ability to understand and apply regulatory guidelines and technical procedures.
• Ability to interpret maps, aerial photography, numerical data, and graphical information.
• Strong organizational, time-management, and project-management skills.

Nice To Haves

• 1-5+ years' environmental consulting experience preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferred.
• Licensed asbestos and lead-based paint inspector preferred.
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certified preferred.

Responsibilities

• Complete Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and support other scientists with assessment activities.
• Conduct hazardous materials building inspections, including chemical inventories, asbestos inspections, lead-based paint testing, radon testing, mold assessments, and indoor air sampling.
• Collect air, water, groundwater, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, solid waste, and soil samples for laboratory analysis.
• Monitor remediation and investigation activities, including geoprobe drilling, temporary well installation, soil and groundwater sampling, and sample packaging and shipping.
• Operate scientific instruments and accurately document field activities.
• Analyze and correlate field data, identify discrepancies, and follow established technical procedures.
• Prepare detailed technical reports and required project documentation.
• Lead field technicians and document and oversee subcontractor activities.
• Coordinate with project managers, regulators, clients, insurance representatives, vendors, and other project stakeholders.
• Travel up to 10%, primarily by driving a company vehicle.
• Handle waste for remediation, sampling, packaging, and correctly package and label various wastes that may contain petroleum, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), paint, solvents, wastewater sludge, and more.
• Provide troubleshooting and maintenance of mechanical and electronic systems including pumps, remediation systems, and monitoring equipment.
• Research information and compile reports such as status reports, groundwater sampling, site characterization, LNAPL recovery, and risk assessments.
• Request information from various governmental and regulatory organizations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
