About The Position

Springer Nature is a leading global publisher of research, committed to advancing knowledge and understanding through its trusted brands and innovative products and services. The Nature Portfolio, part of Springer Nature, publishes high-quality journals across various scientific disciplines, including the leading open access multidisciplinary journal, Nature Communications. The Human Behaviour team within Nature Communications is seeking candidates with a background in quantitative social sciences or computational science with expertise in human behaviour research to join their team. This role involves handling original research papers, overseeing the peer review process, making editorial decisions, liaising with other editors and experts, attending conferences, and commissioning/editing reviews and editorials. The position is demanding and intellectually stimulating, offered on a permanent basis.

Requirements

  • A PhD in the quantitative social sciences or in computational science.
  • Experience with mathematical/computational modelling and simulations is especially welcomed.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more.
  • Demonstrated breadth of interest in scientific research, both within and beyond their specialty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal.
  • Eagerness to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

Nice To Haves

  • Significant research experience is preferred.
  • Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for Senior Editor positions.

Responsibilities

  • Handling original research papers and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Making well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice.
  • Determining the representation of their subject in the journal.
  • Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with experts in the international scientific community.
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.
  • Commissioning and editing reviews, and writing editorials.
