About The Position

BMC, with over 25 years of experience in open access publishing, aims to publish high-quality, impactful research in biology, health sciences, and medicine. This role contributes to the success of BMC Medicine by supporting editorial handling and content development, particularly in oncology and endocrinology. It involves building strong relationships with internal and external editorial teams, as well as other departments like Editorial Operations, Production, and Marketing. The position requires ensuring quality in manuscript handling and published content, advising on editorial policy, investigating ethics cases, contributing to external Editorial Board development, and participating in journal strategy and development discussions. The role also involves promoting BMC Medicine through special projects, marketing efforts, and website content, while supporting the editorial team culture.

Requirements

  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a biomedical field, ideally within oncology and/or endocrinology.
  • Interest in promoting the dissemination of scientific knowledge, particularly open access publishing.
  • Excellent communication skills: tactful, professional, and persuasive.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills, able to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals.
  • Highly customer focused.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent BMC Medicine at external events.
  • Able to respond to non-routine circumstances.
  • Self-motivated, with a positive, can-do approach.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure quality in manuscript handling and published content by handling individual submissions and advising editorial board members.
  • Uphold appropriate editorial standards and maintain the BMC Medicine editorial ethos.
  • Advise on editorial policy development.
  • Support the investigation and resolution of publishing or research ethics cases.
  • Contribute to the recruitment, training, and engagement of new Editorial Board Members (EBMs).
  • Initiate and contribute to journal development, including strategy discussions and generation of development plans.
  • Work with colleagues to support subject-specific strategy development at BMC Medicine.
  • Drive the transfer of appropriate submissions to the most suitable destination journal, prioritizing author service and adhering to editorial standards.
  • Encourage submission of high-quality manuscripts via author outreach and journal strategy.
  • Support special projects within BMC Medicine to increase journal visibility, promote values, and attract content.
  • Contribute to the efforts of the Marketing team, providing input into marketing plans, campaigns, and materials.
  • Develop journal website content and features to raise the profile of BMC Medicine.
  • Contribute to the culture of the BMC Medicine editorial team by supporting colleagues, covering when needed, and sharing expertise.
