About The Position

Brandeis University is looking for an Associate Network Engineer in their IT department. This role will work closely with the other engineers to assist and learn the design of system and network configurations, assist with documenting and installing new networks and technologies, and helping to maintain and upgrade existing systems as needed. They will work closely with the Senior Network Engineer and Lead infrastructure engineer to learn best practices and develop their broader technical and professional knowledge. This role is responsible for helping to ensure a highly available, secure, and scalable network that supports academic, research, and administrative operations. The Associate Network Engineer will work with other members of the network, systems, applications, and security teams to help design, deploy, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain all the university’s network operations. The primary goal of this position is to help to maximize reliability, availability, performance, and security of the network. This is a mostly technical and operations-based role that involves a high level of complexity and problem solving. It will require excellent written and verbal communications skills working in a team-oriented environment. You will need to have the ability to work both on your own and with the team. This position requires off hours work for maintenance or incident response.

Requirements

  • BS/equivalent in Computer Science, or related field plus 1-3 years of related experience in enterprise and datacenter networking or AS/equivalent plus 3-5 years or HS/GED/equivalent plus 5-7 years.
  • A basic understanding of networking protocols and technologies (TCP/IP, OSPF, DNS, DHCP, and VLAN)
  • A basic understanding of the OSI model.
  • Familiarity with enterprise-grade networking hardware (e.g., Arista, Aruba, Cisco, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Time management skills (including task prioritization).
  • Eager to learn and explore various projects outside of your job scope.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed, and committed to improving your skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in solving technical issues which can include Routers, Switches, VMware, Servers, Wireless and Firewalls.
  • Assist to resolve operational problems that have been escalated beyond Help Desk first response.
  • Monitor networks and related systems performance.
  • Prepare documentation and guides that can be used across teams with varying levels of technical knowledge.
  • Assist in the configuration of automatic backups for all networking equipment and configurations.
  • Responsible for all location’s networking systems.
  • Responsible for assisting with deploying network hardware upgrades.
  • Maintaining network documentation, including inventory lists and warranty information.
  • Assist in the deployment and support local and remote data centers.
  • Assist in the upgrade firmware on network equipment to mitigate security risks, and to provide new functionality when needed.
  • Work with engineers to help design network maintenance and expansion.
  • Perform network reviews, evaluate current state, and provide feedback for improvement.
  • Learn existing solutions and provide improvement feedback to engineers.
  • Ensures that server systems and networks maintain required availability, performance, and capacity for growth.
  • Engage with external vendor support as required.
  • Executes additional activities that support ITS as assigned.
  • Act as on-site technical point of contact for network infrastructure components requiring outside vendor participation, including but not limited to campus voice, data, security, energy management, food service, card access, and retail point-of-sales.
  • Participate in technical and business discussions relative to future architecture direction aligning with the University’s goals.
  • Occasionally exceed 7 hours per day and/or 35 hours per week.
  • After hours and weekend work occasionally occur.
  • Provide periodic status reports on projects and system conditions as required/requested by ITS Management.
  • Represent ITS network interests and provide technical specifications with regard to Capital Projects and other non-ITS projects that may occur.
