About The Position

The Associate Merchant is responsible for merchandising functions for assigned categories, including contributing to business objectives, achieving sales and margin goals, executing merchandising strategy, and providing analytical support, insights, and recommendations to the merchandise team. The role covers Home Textiles & Luggage categories and includes planning and forecasting, buying and vendor negotiations, assortment and pricing decisions, performance analysis, and identifying merchandising risks and opportunities. The Associate Merchant also provides direction and guidance to Merchant Assistants and performs other duties as assigned.

This is a hybrid role based at BJ’s Club Support Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Team members work in the office Tuesday through Thursday and remotely Monday and Friday.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in business or an operations-related field.
• 2–5 years of professional merchandising or retail operations experience.
• Knowledge of vendor negotiation techniques.
• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate on the development of sales and margin plans and sales forecasts for assigned categories.
• Manage and control open-to-buy positioning and buy merchandise for assigned categories.
• Participate in direct vendor negotiations on merchandise pricing, quantity, delivery, and terms.
• Identify and implement merchandise packaging and presentation techniques that enhance productivity and execution.
• Assess merchandise mix based on consumer trends and business needs, develop planograms, and provide assortment recommendations.
• Review advertising and promotion analytics to evaluate performance, refine merchandise plans, and suggest strategy adjustments.
• Implement category pricing strategy and execute exit strategies for slow-selling items.
• Assess pricing based on the competitive landscape, sales and margin objectives, and price indexing and targets.
• Research the competitive landscape and consumer trends to ensure alignment with strategy.
• Identify merchandising risks and opportunities and present recommendations.
• Provide effective and supportive direction and guidance to Merchant Assistants.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
