About The Position

Deepgram is seeking an exceptional lawyer to join its lean, high-impact legal team. This role will lead legal work across Deepgram's models and the products built on them, operating at the intersection of law and model development. The ideal candidate is a builder with sharp instincts, sound judgment, and fluency in product, who is comfortable with ambiguity. The legal team has a significant role, partnering with research, data, and product teams on novel legal questions related to model development and user experiences. This position will help Deepgram navigate the rapidly evolving AI legal frameworks internationally while maintaining its leadership in voice AI. The role involves thinking through complex issues from first principles, designing scalable frameworks, and establishing Deepgram as a trusted leader. This is an opportunity to focus on the legal questions defining the future of AI and voice technology. The Associate General Counsel will be the third lawyer on the team, reporting to the General Counsel, and will help establish a legal function that scales with the company's rapid growth, utilizing AI as a default mode of operation to set a standard for AI-native legal work.

Requirements

  • JD from a U.S. accredited law school.
  • 7–15 years of experience in legal practice (or more), in-house, at a firm, or both.
  • Demonstrated experience counseling product, research, or engineering teams on legal questions related to AI development and deployment.
  • Fluency in privacy, IP, data licensing, consumer protection, and the international AI regulatory landscape, with a willingness to learn areas of less depth.
  • Comfort working in legal grey areas and providing clear, actionable advice.
  • Experience with an AI-native legal practice, including built-in workflows.
  • Exceptional writing skills: precise, plain, and compelling.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience at a foundation model company or AI research lab.
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more emerging AI regulatory regimes (e.g., EU AI Act, US states, UK, APAC).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the go-to counsel for data and research teams on legal questions within model development, designing frameworks for rapid and confident research progress.
  • Partner with product teams to launch products and features that enhance user experience.
  • Draft and review consumer-facing terms, policies, disclosures, and marketing materials for products.
  • Continue to develop and communicate the company's privacy program to build customer trust.
  • Stay informed about international AI legal frameworks, translate developments into actionable principles and policies, and help shape Deepgram's perspective on responsible AI development.
  • Develop deep expertise in current AI legal issues and contribute to the company's and the broader field's understanding of these topics.
  • Build an AI-native legal function with scalable workflows and systems to enhance the team's impact.
