About The Position

This position is for an Associate/Full Professor who will serve as the Lead Physician for Rural Faculty Professional Development and AI-Enabled Medical Education at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Office of Medical Education. The role involves educating faculty, residents, fellows, and medical students, with a specific focus on leading faculty development initiatives for the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical education. The position will collaborate with various departments and leadership to implement faculty development opportunities supporting the expansion of undergraduate and graduate medical education to rural areas in Hawaii. The role also includes conducting scholarly work in medical education, providing support for faculty teaching transformations, and participating in relevant educational committees. The position is a part-time, 25% FTE, temporary, non-tenure track, 11-month appointment, renewable annually based on performance and/or funding. The role is expected to begin around July 2026.

Requirements

  • M.D./D.O. degree from an accredited medical school
  • Relevant board certification or qualification in the clinical discipline of the specific position
  • A minimum of four (4) years in the rank of Assistant Professor or four years of other medical experience, or a total of four (4) years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other medical experience or one (1) year at the rank of Associate Professor at another accredited medical school (for Associate Professor)
  • A minimum of four (4) years in the rank of Associate Professor or ten years of other medical experience, or a total of ten years of teaching in the rank of Associate Professor and other health care experience, or one (1) year at the rank of Professor at another health care school of recognized standing (for Professor)
  • Proven ability in teaching, research, and program administration.
  • Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the clinical specialty.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience using educational technology, learning management systems, assessment platforms, data-informed advising tools, or other digital tools to support teaching, assessment, feedback, or learner development.
  • Commitment to the responsible, ethical, and learner-centered use of technology and/or artificial intelligence in medical education, faculty development, assessment, or clinical teaching.
  • Evidence of skill in small group teaching, delivering lectures, and participating in conferences and colloquia, as well as expertise as a resource person.
  • Experience with teaching methods that emphasize active, self-directed learning by learners
  • Ability to serve as a role model for learners and junior colleagues
  • Evidence of research/scholarship in medical education or related areas
  • Able to travel to the neighbor islands in Hawai'i
  • Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the clinical department and health care profession (for Professor)

Responsibilities

  • Engage in the education and training of faculty, residents, fellows, and/or medical students in the JABSOM MD program, residency programs, clinical departments, and rural/community-based training settings.
  • Lead faculty development initiatives focused on the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical education, including AI-enabled learning support, individualized learning plans, coaching, assessment, feedback, curriculum mapping, educational quality improvement, and ethical use of data-informed tools.
  • Work with the Graduate Medical Education (GME), Office of Medical Education (OME), neighbor island medical education lead physicians, and relevant health system leadership at rural clinical training sites, the Faculty Development working group, and relevant clinical departments to plan and implement multi-mode faculty development opportunities that support expansion of undergraduate medical education (UME) and GME to rural areas in Hawai'i and strengthen clinician educators across the medical education continuum, in the areas of teaching, assessment, feedback, coaching, supervision, and/or learner support for medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Conduct scholarly work in medical education that may include research, program evaluation, faculty development scholarship, competency-based medical education (CBME) implementation, AI-enabled educational innovation, rural health workforce development, or curricular innovations.
  • Provide as-needed support for faculty needing or wanting to transform their teaching methods to better meet the needs of today's learners, align with current educational best practices, and reflect how health care is practiced in interprofessional, team-based, technology-enabled, rural, and community-based settings.
  • Periodically participate in meetings of the JABSOM Educational Technology Committee, Curriculum 2029 working groups, subcommittees of the Curriculum committee, Faculty Development working group, GME committee or subcommittees, rural health transformation program (RHTP) medical education expansion workgroups, or other relevant educational committees.
  • Contribute to the mission of the Office of Medical Education and the expansion of rural health education in the areas of faculty development, community service, community outreach, educational innovation, and rural/neighbor island engagement.
  • Attend and participate in functions required of all OME faculty, such as Medical Education Grand Rounds, Faculty Meetings, and retreats.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to assisting with grant-related reporting or evaluation activities.
