About The Position

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) College of Engineering is seeking an exceptionally accomplished tenured faculty member for a Strategic Senior Faculty position. This role is part of a university-wide initiative to recruit high-impact faculty to support its growing research portfolio. The successful candidate will contribute to VCU's research capabilities in one or more of the college's research thrust areas: Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, and Computing; Human Health and Medicine; or Sustainability: Materials, Energy & Environment. Candidates with strong research accomplishments in related areas like robotics, cybersecurity, or manufacturing will also be considered. The appointee will join one of the five academic departments within the College of Engineering. VCU is an R1 university with a strong emphasis on research and innovation, and its College of Engineering is expanding its interdisciplinary research and educational offerings. The position is located in Richmond, Virginia, a vibrant city with a rich culture and numerous amenities.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related science field.
  • Academic accomplishments commensurate with appointment at the level of Full Professor or exceptionally qualified Associate Professor (rising to professorship).
  • An outstanding record of scholarship in one or more of the advertised research thrust areas.
  • International reputation as a leading researcher, evidenced by awards such as society fellow status, national academy of engineering or science membership, or similar recognitions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students, or a commitment to do so.
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Experience contributing to or leading large, multi-investigator research projects.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses within the College of Engineering curriculum and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Conduct research with an established record, international reputation, and external funding, complementing and expanding existing expertise.
  • Engage in collaborative research and scholarly activity.
  • Participate in service activities for the department, College, University, and professional organizations.
  • Engage in outreach efforts to the local community.
  • As appropriate, participate in collaborative clinical activities in scholarship and service.
