About The Position

Wayne State University's College of Education (COE) is seeking an experienced Associate or Full Professor with a tenured faculty position. This full-time, 9-month role focuses on the History of Education and/or Cultural Studies in Education, with a research agenda centered on Black education. The position involves graduate teaching and advising in the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) program, curriculum development, and coordination with the WSU Detroit Center for Black Studies for youth and professional development, and school-community engagement programs. Wayne State University is a public, urban research university in Detroit, Michigan, committed to excellence, collaboration, integrity, diversity, and inclusion. The College of Education, established in 1881, offers accredited degree programs and educates approximately 2,000 students annually, with a history of engagement with urban communities. The university is classified as a "doctoral university: very high research activity" and is located in Midtown Detroit.

Requirements

An earned doctorate in Education, Black or African/African American Studies, a disciplinary or interdisciplinary field in the humanities, or a related field.
A scholarly record demonstrating a sustained commitment to advancing the study of Black education.
Publications in reputable academic journals in education, humanities, and/or cultural studies, monographs, edited volumes, and/or journal special issues.
Experience and interest in and capacity to advise doctoral students.
Commitment to working with communities and organizations that reflect Detroit’s demographics.
Commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and graduate student advising.
Eagerness to embody the College’s vision of radical neighborliness.

Demonstrated ability to raise external funds to support research and collaborative projects.
Established a community-engaged and Black Studies-focused research agenda, preferably through works supporting urban schools and cultural institutions.
Engaged in humanities-focused educational and curriculum initiatives.
Track record of ongoing engagement with educators, youth, community leaders and organizers, and/or cultural workers.
Engaged in multi- and trans-disciplinary research and collaborations both within and beyond education.
Engaged in dissemination practices that raise the visibility of Black Studies in Education (e.g., publications in influential journals and/or media outlets, state- or national-level speaking engagements, community-based programming with notable impact).

Responsibilities

Teach and advise graduate students in the ELPS program.
Inform and assist in the development and oversight of curriculum.
Contribute to youth and professional development programs.
Engage in school-community engagement programs in coordination with the WSU Detroit Center for Black Studies.
Conduct research that examines the historical, cultural, political, intellectual, and institutional dimensions of Black educational experiences.
Disseminate research findings through publications, speaking engagements, and community programming.
Advise doctoral students, particularly those in the ELPS program.
