About The Position

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, in conjunction with the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health, is seeking applications for an Academic Hepatologist. This role is within the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease at Toronto General Hospital, UHN, for a five-year renewable term, supported by the Francis-Lecker Chair in Liver Research. The successful candidate will be an accomplished physician with expertise in managing acute and chronic liver disease, a strong research background, and a vision to advance UHN's liver disease program. The position involves comprehensive care for liver disease patients, both ambulatory and hospitalized, as a full-time Clinician Scientist. A graduate degree (MSc, PhD, or equivalent) is required, along with an established research program in clinical and/or translational research. The Chairholder will provide research leadership, foster collaborations, and lead clinical trials and translational research. Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or possess equivalent qualifications, and be eligible for licensure in Ontario. Academic rank, compensation, and contractual arrangements will be based on qualifications and accomplishments. The position offers a minimum annual income of CAD $350,000, with compensation being highly competitive for senior academic hepatologists in Ontario. Proficiency in English is required.

Requirements

  • MD degree or equivalent.
  • Residency and subspecialty training in hepatology.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the management of acute and chronic liver disease.
  • Distinguished record of scholarly achievement in liver disease research.
  • Compelling vision for advancing and expanding UHN's liver disease program, both clinically and academically.
  • Hold a graduate degree (MSc, PhD, or equivalent).
  • Bring an established and impactful program of clinical and/or translational research.
  • Complement existing strengths within the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease and/or develop emerging areas of academic excellence.
  • Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or possess equivalent qualifications that would permit eligibility for practice in Ontario.
  • Hold, or be eligible for, licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  • Proficiency in English.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care to both ambulatory and hospitalized patients with liver disease.
  • Conduct clinical and/or translational research in liver disease.
  • Provide research leadership by expanding the academic hepatology program.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Lead investigator-initiated as well as industry-sponsored clinical trials.
  • Conduct innovative translational liver disease research.
