Position Summary: The Associate Nursing Director, Downtown Campus is responsible for developing and overseeing the clinical and business operations for all adult inpatient nursing services delivered at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown. This includes, and not limited to, the Intensive Care Unit, Telemetry Unit, 4Center Surgical Unit, 3West Medical Unit, 3Center Family Medicine Unit, House Operations Manager and Staffing Office. The Associate Nursing Director will work to foster a team approach to provide efficient quality care and support for all patients while embracing the organization’s culture, mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing or related field. If Master’s Degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in leadership role in a complex health care system with demonstrated ability to work with multiple disciplines to ensure effective health care operations with progressive leadership in acute care hospital operations.
  • Demonstrated experience assuring patient safety, quality of care, and compliance with the Joint Commission and state and federal agencies.
  • Experience developing a high performing flexible workforce.
  • Demonstrated experience developing budgets, establishing priorities, and negotiating resource issues.
  • Experience modeling service excellence principles/standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work experience in a community hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Work across multiple nursing functions and with medical and hospital leaders to create a consistent approach to HR management.
  • Hold unit leaders within a department accountable for high performance and high engagement by articulating expectations, monitoring performance and providing feedback consistently across areas of responsibility.

  • Approve resource allocations and staffing models.
  • Develop an environment for the successful recruitment and retention of staff.
  • Develop and retain qualified nursing leadership staff and build an effective leadership team.
  • Encourage staff participation in shared governance.
  • Develop strategy for budget priorities.
  • Hold nurse managers and other leaders accountable for managing respective budgets.
  • Work with own leaders within and external to area to innovatively address and resolve budget issues.
  • Provide leadership for initiatives to improve operating financial performance.
  • Work across multiple nursing functions to develop, monitor and enhance quality and service indicators and business processes.
  • Oversee patient satisfaction and quality indicators.
  • Assure that clinical services, educational programs, and research activities are in compliance with all applicable internal and external regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission.
  • Review and analyze data to enhance productivity and efficiency.
  • Create an environment of shared decision-making.
  • Promotes multidisciplinary collaboration on patient care and related issues.
  • Collaborates with nursing and medical staff, various administrative staff and directors/managers in planning for and providing quality and consistent patient care services based on best practice.

  • Assure that clinical services, educational programs, and research activities are in compliance with all applicable internal and external requirements including the Joint Commission.
  • Support and/or lead various performance improvement initiatives to ensure quality outcomes for patients.

  • Address implementation issues across nursing functions and with other departments.

  • Serve as liaison among multiple clinical functions, research, and education units to support collaboration in identifying opportunities for improvement and program development.
  • Facilitate communication and cooperation across departments to ensure the standardization and coordination of care.
