About The Position

The Associate Director (AD) is the first line of defense for operational risk and is responsible for supporting Group Risk Management (GRM) business units in identifying and mitigating operational risk. The AD supports operational risk management leadership within GRM, providing expertise and support to senior management, enhancing their ability to anticipate and manage operational risks effectively. This individual leads the execution of Operational Risk program in GRM including Risk and Control Identification and Assessment, Enterprise Issue Management, Operational Risk Events data collection, Risk Appetite / Key Risk Indicators, Change Management Risk identification and assessment, process identification and documentation, Conduct, Culture, Reputation risk management, senior management reporting of operational risk profile, and regulatory compliance program for conduct and privacy. The AD consults on the control environment of GRM’s business and processes to identify gaps and to recommend control enhancements to improve the environment. The AD leads operational risk reviews and provides expert feedback on the operational risk impact of major change initiatives, process improvements and transformational projects.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in a combination of knowledge, skill and background in leading operational risk practices, audit or compliance functions, and/or one or more businesses in GRM.
  • Risk Management experience within a financial services environment, conducting risk and control assessment / process reviews, and/or key controls assessments (monitoring/testing).
  • Professionalism and solutions orientation required to liaise directly with Senior Management within GRM.
  • Previous experience working in highly regulated business environments in the financial services sector.
  • University degree, or equivalent, ideally with a financial designation or relevant professional qualification.
  • Strong presentation, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A CA, FRM or CPA designation, in addition to an undergraduate degree is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain operational risk policies aligned with enterprise requirements and develop clear procedures that translate standards into actionable guidance for stakeholders to support any change management
  • Lead detailed risk assessments to determine where the risks might manifest and where controls need to be put in place.
  • Provide guidance and act as liaison on control assessment on key controls and control evaluation on non-key controls.
  • Support GRM units to manage issues from all sources and act as EIM issue lead to support creation, closure, monitoring and reporting and deep-dive analysis as needed.
  • Lead the investigation of large loss events to assess for potential systemic weaknesses, if similar issues can arise in other parts of RBC, and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken.
  • Perform operational risk assessments in a fully coordinated manner with other groups and in accordance with RBC’s Enterprise Operational Risk Management Framework and associated standards requirements.
  • Responsible for developing regular and ad-hoc reporting to GRM’s Operating Committee and Group Risk Management.
  • Analyzes and draws conclusions to report on the results from the programs, outcomes and status, including Operational Risk Profile.
  • Design, document, and refine operational risk processes, policies, and procedures to enhance efficiency and effectiveness, leveraging RBC Assist where applicable.
  • Create business cases and provide recommendations for process improvement driven by data insights to build a strategic roadmap
  • Promotes understanding of operational risk management within GRM.
  • Responsible for providing guidance and support to GRM’s management teams with respect to operational risk programs.
