About The Position

The Associate Actuary independently leads complex actuarial analyses, influences business decisions, and contributes to team and process development, combining deep technical expertise with strong ownership from analysis through implementation. The Berkshire Hathaway Group of Insurance Companies is looking for an Associate Actuary to support the insurtech initiative, THREE (www.threeinsurance.com). This person will be part of a small, fast-paced team and gain exposure to many parts of the company and insurance product. The ideal candidate will be able to juggle multiple priorities with accuracy and have an entrepreneurial spirit. They will lead pricing, business analysis, and product development initiatives for assigned lines of business, partnering closely with underwriting and product teams, and serve as a technical resource in the development and testing of rating and policy administration systems. This job is hybrid. Hybrid associates have 2 mandatory in-office days per week at our Stamford, CT location. We believe the 2-day requirement provides a good balance of quality in-office time while still preserving the convenience of at-home work.

Requirements

  • Approaching ACAS designation and pursuing FCAS
  • 5+ years of actuarial pricing/reserving experience in Property & Casualty insurance
  • Proficiency in SQL, R, Python, VBA, or similar data analysis tools
  • Prior experience with rate filings preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead rate indications, reserving analyses, profitability studies, and other actuarial projects across BOP, Umbrella, Workers' Compensation, and Commercial Auto, owning work from analysis through implementation
  • Provide actuarial support across a diverse product set, including liquor liability and catastrophe-exposed perils (flood, earthquake, hurricane, severe convective storm)
  • Support the development and filing of rate changes with regulatory bodies
  • Apply business and actuarial expertise to develop effective, well-informed solutions
  • Identify and implement improved methods and processes to enhance team effectiveness
  • Present analyses and recommendations clearly, influencing decisions across all levels
  • Maintain documentation that enables others to understand and reproduce the work
  • Mentor and support the development of junior analysts
