About The Position

Requires the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of various tasks and measures related to assistive technology. This includes the application of rehabilitation technology (i.e. therapeutic devices associated with the rehabilitation process) in order to facilitate the service delivery process within the realm of evidence-based practice. Services provided may include integration of devices across multiple environments and may involve product design, fabrication, modification, and installation of unique and individualized technologies. Services may relate to any/all of the following: computers, augmentative alternative communication (AAC), electronic cognitive devices, seating and positioning, mobility (manual and power wheelchairs), adaptive devices for daily living, recreation, and modifications within specific environmental settings (work, home, or school).

Requirements

Knowledge of assistive technology and rehabilitation technology (minimum of 2 years of experience).
Knowledge of ergonomics and universal design (minimum of 2 years of experience).
Knowledge of current standards of practice within the field of assistive technology (minimum of 2 years of experience).
Employment of evidence-based practice and outcome measures within the field of assistive technology
Computer skills, ideally in conjunction with computer access and advanced data management.
Communication and interpersonal skills
Technology and Instrumentation skills
Teamwork and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy or occupational therapy.
Current, unrestricted licensure as a Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapy in the State of Texas.
Current certification and registration in good standing with the applicable national credentialing organization (NBCOT for Occupational Therapists or successful completion of the NPTE and all applicable licensure requirements for Physical Therapists).
Current Basic Life Support/CPR certification for Health Care Providers.

Nice To Haves

Master’s or Doctorate with a specialty in Pediatrics highly desirable.
A clinical internship in assistive technology, rehabilitation technology or rehabilitation engineering is preferred as well as certificate in assistive technology, rehabilitation technology, or rehabilitation engineering.
Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) certification or ATP eligible from the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) preferred but not required.
National Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification through the National CPS Certification Training preferred but not required.
Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Design, fabricate, customize, integrate, modify, and repair assistive technology (AT), durable medical equipment (DME), seating and positioning systems, and adaptive equipment to meet individual patient needs.
Lead the assistive technology service delivery process, including comprehensive assessment, measurement, equipment trials, recommendations, implementation, fitting, follow-up, and ongoing evaluation of equipment effectiveness.
Coordinate equipment clinic services by collaborating with physicians, vendors, patients, caregivers, and the interdisciplinary team to facilitate timely equipment evaluations, recommendations, fittings, and follow-up appointments.
Complete and maintain all required documentation related to assistive technology services, including Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs), insurance documentation, prior authorizations, appeals, equipment justifications, equipment inventories, maintenance records, and other funding documentation.
Collaborate with case management, funding agencies, community organizations, and charitable programs to secure medically necessary equipment through insurance, grants, donations, and other funding sources by preparing required clinical documentation, invoices, appeals, and supporting materials.
Serve as Co-Chair of the External Needs Committee by coordinating internal equipment funding requests, gathering supporting documentation, presenting requests for committee review, communicating funding decisions, and completing all required follow-up documentation.
Serve as the primary liaison between CRIT and assistive technology manufacturers, vendors, suppliers, and funding organizations regarding equipment specifications, customization, repairs, procurement, and service needs.
Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team to assess patient needs, develop recommendations, implement assistive technology solutions, and monitor patient outcomes.
Educate patients, caregivers, students, volunteers, and interdisciplinary team members regarding assistive technology, seating and positioning, mobility equipment, AAC systems, adaptive equipment, DME, equipment safety, and best practices.
Ensure the safe use, maintenance, inspection, inventory management, and regulatory compliance of all assistive technology and durable medical equipment utilized throughout the organization.
Critically analyze, synthesize, and evaluate patient outcomes and the effectiveness of assistive technology interventions to support evidence-based clinical decision making.
Resolve equipment-related concerns by collaborating with patients, families, vendors, funding agencies, and clinical team members to facilitate timely problem resolution.
Maintain patient confidentiality and protect sensitive information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
Evaluate and treat pediatric patients with a variety of neurological, orthopedic, developmental, and functional impairments within the clinician's professional scope of practice (Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy).
Perform comprehensive evaluations utilizing standardized assessments, clinical observations, and objective measures to develop individualized, family-centered plans of care.
Develop measurable treatment goals, implement evidence-based interventions, and regularly assess patient progress toward functional outcomes.
Document evaluations, re-evaluations, daily treatment notes, progress reports, discharge summaries, and all other required documentation accurately and within established timelines.
Maintain the safety and well-being of patients throughout all therapeutic interventions and assistive technology services.
Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, case managers, vendors, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care, communicate progress, and address barriers to successful outcomes.
Provide education and training to patients, families, caregivers, staff, students, and community partners regarding treatment interventions, home programs, equipment use, and assistive technology.
Provide supervision, mentorship, and clinical instruction to therapy assistants (as applicable), therapy students, volunteers, and other assigned personnel in accordance with professional licensure requirements.
Demonstrate effective time management, productivity, and organizational skills while balancing direct patient care, assistive technology services, documentation, equipment coordination, and administrative responsibilities.
Maintain professional competency by adhering to applicable licensure requirements, professional codes of ethics, organizational policies, and continuing education expectations.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of the organization.
