About The Position

The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program is comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges and offers a comprehensive program of regular physical education, intramural, recreational, club, and varsity sports. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), as a member of NCAA Division III. The Program is comprised of 21 varsity sports (10 men’s, 11 women’s) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student-athlete population of approximately 530. CMS has established itself as a national power in volleyball, winning an NCAA Division III title in 2017, the first women’s NCAA championship in CMS history. The Athenas also spent ten weeks as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation in 2022, and reached the national semifinals in both 2021 and 2023. CMS plays its home matches at Roberts Pavilion, one of the top Division III facilities in the nation, which opened in 2015 and served as the host facility for the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships. The Athenas also finished first or tied for first in the SCIAC for nine straight seasons from 2015-24, and had six straight seasons of 25 wins or more from 2017-23. The volleyball program has also thrived academically, with three different Athenas earning the prestigious Academic All-America award in the last five years, and over 75 percent of its student-athletes earning SCIAC All-Academic Team honors in that span. This position is responsible for assisting the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach in all facets of the program, including but not limited to: organizing and conducting team training and practices, recruiting, team travel logistics, scholar-athlete development, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. This position is also responsible for additional administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach and will assist the Sport Operations Department, primarily while out of season. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy are required to drive college-owned vehicles.
  • Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.
  • Deploy professional skills, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
  • An evident understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college environment is necessary along with proven experience in recruiting student-athletes to highly selective institutions.
  • Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills.
  • Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED or willingness to complete certifications upon hire.
  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research, menu-driven databases).
  • Demonstrate understanding of the use of equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of duties.
  • Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Assist head coach with developing and implementing training and instruction for practices and competitions.
  • Assist with all administrative aspects of the sports program. This includes but is not limited to: prompt completion of all administrative paperwork, team travel logistics, creation of practice plans, scholar-athlete and team development, and collaboration with CMS athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operation, compliance, equipment, facilities, and events.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of academically qualified student-athletes to the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges.
  • Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department.
  • Remain in good standing of all required training and certifications, including but not limited to concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention.
  • Represent CMS Athletic Department and the women’s volleyball program in a positive manner within the SCIAC as well as regionally and nationally.
  • Work closely with the Sport Operations team to assist with Games Management, primarily during the off-season.
  • Assist with facility operations, including lining fields, setup and takedown of arena bleachers, and carpeting.
  • Ensure efficient operation of all competitive contests for participants, officials, visiting institutions, and fans.
  • Occasionally serve as the lead administrator for Games Management, supervising student workers and ensuring a smooth gameday experience.
  • Perform any other duties deemed necessary for the functioning and success of the Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations.
  • Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
