About The Position

The Assistant Vice President for Capital Planning, Sustainability & Campus Operations will provide principal support to the Vice President for Capital Planning, Sustainability & Campus Operations. This role involves collaborative work with the Vice President and the Facilities Services Department to achieve the University's mission and goals. Key areas of focus include campus facilities and operations, capital planning, design and construction, sustainability initiatives, maintenance and operations of campus spaces, and team leadership and development. The Facilities Services Department encompasses campus facility planning, space utilization, design and construction management, custodial services, facility and grounds operations, campus maintenance, waste management (including recycling and sustainability), utilities and energy services, central receiving, transportation, and environmental waste. The leader in this position is responsible for implementing the overall direction set by the Vice President, leading a team of skilled professionals, managing projects, and contributing to department leadership. This includes providing thought leadership for the Campus Thermal Energy Network and developing policies, measurements, and budgetary oversight for functional units. The role also involves initiating and developing relationships with key campus and community stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • At least 10 years of relevant project management, construction, and/or design experience.
  • Demonstrated, substantial experience managing complex teams and organizations with an entrepreneurial spirit and strategic thinking.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from top management, public groups, and board of directors.
  • Strategic and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of skilled professionals in the facilities services team, including skilled trades, custodial, grounds, and operations.
  • Manage projects and contribute to overall department leadership.
  • Provide thought leadership and direct support to enhance and grow the Campus Thermal Energy Network.
  • Develop and execute projects related to campus sustainability and efficiency measures.
  • Develop effective policies and measurements for continuous program review and evaluation.
  • Provide budgetary oversight of various functional units.
  • Identify, scope, and manage projects impacting other units in collaboration with the CMU Leadership team.
  • Supervise employees as assigned.
  • Initiate and develop relationships with key campus and community stakeholders.
  • Assist the Vice President in leading, managing, and holding the Facilities Services department accountable for planning, operating, and maintaining the University's physical assets.
  • Assist in utilizing and improving the project intake form process for campus projects.
  • Ensure departments have the support and resources needed to meet annual goals aligned with the Strategic Plan.
