About The Position

The Assistant Underwriter position is responsible for risk selection and pricing within assigned authority level. This role works with the Territorial Manager - Marketing and the underwriting team to meet loss ratio, written premium, and service objectives.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • 3 + years in Farm Department or equivalent business experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Basic knowledge of Farm rating, coverage and risk selection
  • PC skills
  • Ability to effectively and clearly communicate with agency, team, departmental and company personnel via telephone, fax, e-mail, and one on one dialogue in a highly professional manner.
  • Ability to apply common sense, understanding, reasoning and sound educated judgement coupled with sound personal lines insurance training and experience to properly evaluate and analyze all business for recommended action within assigned authority levels.

  • INS or CPCU courses are encouraged
  • Additional Insurance course work and seminars are recommended

Responsibilities

  • Examines documents such as applications, inspection reports, claim history reports, credit reports, and cost estimators to evaluate risk selections.
  • Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline risks within assigned authority levels.
  • Reviews renewal business for acceptability and prices the renewals based on risk characteristics and market conditions within assigned authority levels.
  • Reviews claims to determine future underwriting actions.
  • Communicates with Territorial Managers – Marketing and other departmental and company personnel regarding underwriting issues.
  • Communicate via telephone, fax, electronic and written communication with agency personnel on underwriting issues.
  • Travels to agencies to strengthen company/agency relationships, to discuss underwriting issues, and for on and off site training.
  • Responsible for demonstrating positive team skills.
  • Provides instructions for rating, classification, pricing and endorsements to CSR staff.
