About The Position

The 12th Judicial District Attorney’s office represents Otero and Lincoln counties. In the 12th Judicial District, we are committed to holding offenders accountable for their actions while safeguarding the constitutional rights of all individuals. The 12th Judicial District is recognized as one of the leading districts in the state for the number of jury trials conducted. As a new attorney, with our district, you will have an opportunity to gain experience in and out of the courtroom and advance your career in prosecution. As an Assistant Trial Attorney assigned in Carrizozo, NM, you will handle a variety of misdemeanors and lower-level felony cases, assist in trial teams; work with law enforcement; participate on boards and task forces and other groups as assigned; may be required to take an on-call rotation; and perform other related job duties. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in District Court, being assigned to felony cases under the supervision of a senior attorney. Incumbent may be required to work under stressful situations and/or conditions. Incumbent may be required to go to crime scenes.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure
  • Basic knowledge and skills in public relations
  • Basic knowledge and skills in organization
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to draft legal documents
  • Ability to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to research and analyze information and situations
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions within guidelines which include decisions to dismiss, proceed to trial or negotiate plea agreements
  • Ability to seek guidance from assigned supervisor and/or higher-level attorneys
  • J. D. degree
  • Current license to practice law in New Mexico
